Using an American debit card to get cash back in NZ?

• Hey all, so I'm a study abroad student in New Zealand and I need some cash. First off, I have a Visa debit card that is tied to my American checking account, secondly, I need cash and I would like to avoid transfer fees whenever possible. So, I'm avoiding atms because that would charge an additional foreign atm fee to my account. This leaves getting cashback with a purchase as the other option. However, I naturally can't get cashback if I use the credit or saving option, so I thought the cheque (?) option would work but it won't accept my debit card there w/ the cashback. So, essentially, should I be able to get cash back with a purchase in NZ using my American debit card? If so, how do I do this? Also, I looked into getting a NZ bank account so I could withdraw cash without fees but there are to many strings attached for my length of stay. Thanks!
