Is there any work in child care in Australia?

Moving to australia to work in childcare?

  • i'm want to move to australia in Jan 2013 (gives me a year to save and sort out visas/work etc) to work for a year but with the hope of residing there permanently. i am 27, a qualified child care worker with 7 years experience. Is it possible to continue this field over in australia on a working visa or am i going to have to go down the backpacker route and take seasonal/bar work etc. i don't really know anyone over there so can't really get any sponsors etc. any helpful websites with personal stories etc would be grateful. i've been through the visa websites but info is very technical etc. also how much money is roughly needed to head over and set up etc and which are the best places to go to. i'm looking for peaceful town yet close to city etc thanks for any info

  • Answer:

Child care managers and pre-school teachers are in demand in Australia. See the General Skilled Migration Skilled Occupation Lists (SOL) here: http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/sol/ The SOL is a list of skilled occupations of high value to the Australian labour market. So if you are qualified enough then you may be able to apply for the special Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 175) without needing to secure an employment sponsor. The Australian government recently started paying a Paid Parental Leave wage to employed women for 18 weeks to take time off to have babies, and heavily subsidises private-sector child care for most taxpayers. Australians everywhere, not just in the big cities, are being financially incentivised to breed like crazy and will need all the child care professionals they can get! You might like the NSW Central Coast, around Gosford, where there are small beach towns in between the cities of Sydney and Newcastle. Nice beaches and quiet suburbs. More affordable than the city. A lot of young families buy houses there to raise their children, and commute to work in the city. Good luck with your immigration.

I think you'll be able to get work in childcare. You'd just need to go through the things you'd probably have to go through where you're from: Working with Children's check (Involves police check) Work Visa The friendliest cities are probably Melbourne and Brisbane. Real estate is probably more affordable around Brisbane, and the weather's a bit more predictable than Melbourne. You'd have to start looking at real estate sites to see how much it would cost. If you're from the US then you're in a bit of a shock when it comes to housing prices. There's usually plenty available to rent though and, depending on suburb, it can be very affordable. I hope this helps, sorry, I don't have much info, but yeah.. :)

Heres some information about living in Melbourne if that's where you decide to go (trust me its an excellent place to live) and with its booming population childcare workers are in high demand!! http://www.liveinvictoria.vic.gov.au/ I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavours! :-)
