How To Find People In Australia?

Do you find most young people in australia homophobic(15-25)?

  • i see facebook comments and stuff that are homophobic like 'your hair cut looks rather homosexual' or one where there was a gay person in a photo and people were writing ****** ******.i also talked to a lot of gay and bisexual people in australia and they said it was quite homophobic.Just because some poll said 70% of aussies support gay marriage means nothing

  • Answer:

No more than in any other country. And who said 70% of people support gay marriage, there aren't that many greens voters here! I'm sorry Aussie, but the use of "Gay" is the ORIGINAL description of homosexuals. It was used even in literature of the 18th century, a description of "A gay young man" actually meant homosexual. So, while it has been used in the context you describe, happy and cheerful up until the '70s, homosexual is its original meaning. (And I'm no relation to Brooks btw!)

There are homophobic young people in Australia but it is nothing like as bad as it was forty years ago. Most gay people get along fine without being hassled by anyone. One problem is the use of the word "gay" in a pejorative sense. When I have fronted young people about this, they do not intend it to be homophobic, it is just another meaning added to the many that "gay" has. When I point out that it is not seen as harmless by gay people, I have found that many will stop using the word in that way. I have lived in cities and in the country in Australia and have not found homophobia to be a problem in recent years. Most gay people stand up for themselves these days and have the support of the law - which wasn't the case in the 1960s and 70s. Australians generally accept people for who they are not what they are. There will always be some homophobia, you have to expect that, but the majority, old or young, have no problems with gay people.

Homophobic means "fear of or contempt for...". It's a well known fact that young people, particularly teenage boys, are said to be "homophobic", but their homophobia is mostly verbal one-upmanship and formed through peer pressure. You'll find that a high percentage of them also show racist tendencies (why are neo-nazis mostly boys and men in the age group you quote, 15-25?). Teen boys are only just working out their sexuality and their place in the world. Many are actually battling with conflicting feelings towards the same and opposite sex - the easy way to put their feelings into place is through ridicule (makes them feel more masculine as per society's expectations). So many of your previous questions relate to homophobia. Perhaps you need to sit down with an older gay person and discuss the whole thing, as you obviously have some issues with the concept. You need to stop feeling like a victim, have confidence in your orientation and get on with your life. All the best.

If by homophobic you mean they don't see homosexuality as a valid or morally correct lifestyle then I sure hope you're right because it fails on both counts ... We don't live in the dark ages but that doesn't mean that morality codes should be rewritten to suit the wishes of a vocal minority.. If people choose to live that way , that is their choice & they wear the consequences , but why should the rest of us have it flaunted in our faces day in & day out . edit..That's another issue ..the way homosexuals don't refer to themselves as just that but have hijacked the term " gay "...why don't they call a spade a spade & wear the title that goes with the condition . If you go to any reputable dictionary from any era prior to the last 20 years you will find that gay means lively , merry , light hearted , cheerful , bright etc etc Hardly a homosexual lifestyle ! Comment has been made here about people using the word in a pejorative way ..well pardon me , it's not us who hijacked the word mate , it's your lot !

Young people do make homophobic comments about hair clothes etc thats what youngens do they taunt one another. Homophobics are mostly those in their 50 - 60s they didn't have sex educatiion in their day and consequently have no idea about what happens during conception. They dont mean to be ignorent they just are.

I think you should pull your head out of facebook & see what young Americans are saying in YA! Not only homophobic, but extremely racist and disgracefully rude to others. All very well to talk about other countries but you should check your own.No I don't find young Australians like that, and I don't bother myself with other countries for that matter.

As one of a generation older than you appear to be, I outgrew facebook some years ago. I concede that it is an effortless means of communication, but very limited. Personally, if I want someone to know something I email or phone them. But, back to your comments. What does****** ****** mean? How many is "a lot?" A comment about someone's haircut is NOT being homophobic, although some homosexuals do wear their hair in the most odd fashion. I would also like to know why you are not out doing something constructive. That way you might discover that most people belonging to a minority group frequently claim discrimination, real or imagined. Most Aussies don't give a hoot what a person's sexual preference, religion, race is so long as whatever is not thrust in our faces.

I find most girls are the opposite... they are all calling themselves bisexual, pansexual etc. You're considered "old fashioned" if you're straight. Guys can be a bit homophobic. I personally don't support gay marriage and I am looked down on for that by friends. The only person who feels the same way as me that I know is my husband. But I also don't support divorce in most cases... or marriage in half of the cases! lol
