    There isn't a national costume. There are certain items of clothing are part of the Australian stereotypical character but not everyone is a sheep shearer (blue singlet), stockman (moleskins, Akubra hat and Drizabone coat) or a lifesaver (speedos). Most people have thongs (a type of footwear not a g-string) and there are certain Australian clothing companies like Mambo that have distinctive designs. Traditional pre-European dress includes a loin cloth and body paint. Generally, though, you won't pick an Australian from a New Zealander, a South African or an American by the clothes they wear.

I don't know that we have a national costume. If we did it would probably be speedos and thongs.

Australia does not have a 'national costume' as such. There have been attempts over the years to invent something like this to boost tourism, but the fact is that like the US, Canada and many younger nations around the world, there is no one costume which says 'Australia'. Cheers :-)

australia is too young a country to have a national or traditional dress. most of our grandparents - great grandparents etc emmigrated from britain. you could look for a traditional aboriginal dress though.

The closest thing we might have to a national costume might be, since most of us go to the beach, would be the classic budgie smuggler: http://www.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/story/0,22049,21720243-5006009,00.html But most younger men wear boardies (shorts) anyway.
