What are some good places to work in New Zealand?

Best places to work/live for 4-6 months in Australia/New Zealand?

  • I'm an 18 year old male currently 6 months into a gap year after graduating High School, and I'm sick of working full time in retail for minimum wage. I'm looking for an escape to travel, explore, work, and live. I would prefer to go somewhere where I can discover the beauty of the country and get the full experience of living in Australia/NZ. I hope to leave in March and stay until July or August but I have no idea where to go. I have enough money saved up to work part time and travel between temp jobs if that is even possible. Some of the fields I'm thinking of going into are: Business management, marketing and advertising, international relations, graphic and concept art. I have looked at several programs that help you find jobs and help you get around but I would like more information on places I could stay for weeks at a time and work, while also traveling around the country and exploring what's out there. Any great places to visit, stories of your travels there, or tips for me would be greatly appreciated :) Thanks!

  • Answer:

Item number 1 : Apply for and get a visa first - in your case a working Holiday visa if from the UK or a Work & Holiday visa if from America. These are valid for 12 months & allow you to work for any one employer for up to 6 months. Item number 2 : Forget the "Business management, marketing, International relations" etc stuff. No employer is going to take on a WHV person for anything remotely associated with employment of that nature. What you will get is lightweight work in things like hospitality ( bar work, dishwashing etc), possibly some temp office clerk work and other things such as that. New Zealand would be more suitable to travel around as it is much much smaller than Australia. It's really easy and cheap to travel around the country and you would be able to experience all that the country has to offer that time because its so compact. The people are really friendly and the scenery is outstanding. As for those types of jobs, no one will hire you as you don't have any qualifications. Australia is extremely large and with big gaps inbetween cities/towns it is less easier to travel and I guess more expensive than New Zealand as you will have to fly if you really want to experience the diverse range of places Australia has to offer. Sydney is really nice and good for tourists as is the Gold coast. As an Australian, New Zealand is my favourite place to travel and I always meet really nice young people my age when travelling around the country. It's reeally beautiful and you would not regret visiting. Good luck and which ever you choose, you will have a blast. We're really lovely people down here!
