How many Aussies are living in NZ?

Why do NZ people who are now naturalised Aussies can't use their old passport that has still got two years.

  • A friend came back from a trip overseas and was told she would have to get a new Australian one. Her friend who got naturalised the same day still uses her old Nz passport and she goes over seas more.

  • Answer:

As with so many other things in life, how you are treated at an immigration point is often to do with the circumstances at the time and the officer on the desk. Firstly, dual nationality is accepted by the Australian government. Secondly, as a dual national, you are not obliged to obtain an Australian passport to leave and enter Australia. However, this advice has been given by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. So, I imagine, the officer your friend came across was simply peeved that your friend hadn't switched passports....... Quote: Entering and Leaving Australia: To avoid delays at airline check-in and again at the border entry point, Australian citizens who are dual nationals are advised to leave and return to Australia on their Australian passport. An Australian citizen cannot be granted a visa for Australia. When entering Australia, all Australians, including those who hold dual nationality, must be able to prove that they are an Australian citizen. An Australian passport is conclusive evidence of a person's identity and citizenship, and provides the holder with unfettered right of entry to Australia. An Australian citizen who arrives without an Australian passport may be delayed until their identity and claims to enter Australia have been checked. If a person holding a foreign passport claims to be an Australian citizen, immigration officers must confirm and verify this through official databases. This will invariably cause some delays to the person while the authorities undertake the necessary enquiries......... Unquote

Seems a bit odd that one can use it but not the other. But I would imagine that if you are naturalised Aussie they would nomally then not regard you as a Kiwi unless you had officially acquired dual nationality

Some countries have a law that if you become a naturalised citizen you must give up your original citizenship, but NZ isn't one of them. My family all have dual NZ and UK citizenship and we're allowed to have both passports. But Aussie may be different. A Dutch guy I know had to give up his Dutch citizenship when he became a naturalised Aussie.
