Where is the best place to live near the ocean?

What is the best place to live in Australia that is desert but near the ocean, and..?

  • In Australia I want to find a place to live that is close to the ocean (within about 20 miles - just far enough to have the house survive an Indonesia or Japan like Tsunami or hurricane given the weird weather these days -- and no earth quakes -- at least NOT like California USA) but is equally close to the desert. Near a good economic location, but not too far from rural areas with cheap houses and land. Also the ocean area should be boater friendly and swimmer friendly, and I was told there are salt water crocodiles down under, so are there certain areas where salt crocs DON'T live (steering clear from other dangerous predators)? And, finally, no snow or cold weather. Any suggestions, or am I being too specific? Thank you.

The only place in Australia where the desert meets the ocean is in Western Australia. The Gibson Desert and the Great Sandy Desert meet the see between Geraldton and Broome. Port Hedland would be the largest desert town on the ocean. The area is known as the Pilbara and much of it is iron ore mines. Western Australia is essentially stable so earthquakes are very seldom generated there and tsunamis generated in Indonesia seldom reach the Australian coast and, if they do, they are substantially weakened by offshore reefs. The entire tropical north coast of Australia is subject to Tropical Cyclones (Hurricanes) and anywhere you choose with a combination of desert and sea is likely to get a tropical cyclone occasionally. Houses are built to withstand them and there are community shelters for everyone. Salt water crocodiles are generally found in the rivers and along the coast in northern Australia, certainly anywhere north of Broome. You are less likely to see them further south. There are sharks on every Australian beach but they seldom attack anyone. There is certainly safe boating, fishing and swimming off the WA coast. Australia is mainly tropical or subtropical. All the areas where the desert meets the sea are tropical and they do not get snow. Winters at worst are mild, not cold, although inland in the desert you can get morning frosts in winter.

Australian crocodiles are found in the northern tropical areas, not in the desert! And the desert ares of Australia are not usually close to economic hubs, unless you want to live in a mining area. But the biggest problem you might face is your eligibility to live in Australia. Have you actually looked into this, because you need to have work skills that match the Government's current needs in order to emigrate to Australia. You can't just move because you feel like it. Have a look at the Australian Government's Immigration website for more information on how to emigrate to Australia: http://www.immi.gov.au

Yes, it's called Utopia. Or there's Penong in South Australia, on the Nullarbor Plain. The world famous Cactus surfing beach is nearby. No boating that I know of. Penong is on the Eyre Highway, so there's lots of passing trade. The only "dangerous predators" are sharks.

The only place I can think of is the mid-north coast coast of Western Australia

As others have said its along the West Australia's coral coast .http://www.australiascoralcoast.com/

Port Hedland would be the closest as already mentioned. Although I don't think you'll find it cheap, the area is the centre of Australia's mining boom and there is a shortage of housing. Fresh food would also be very expensive as the area is so remote. I'm not sure what you mean by rural areas - because it's desert there is very little vegetation in the area, it's pretty much just sand.
