What Are The National Holidays In Australia?

OZZIES !!...PUBLIC HOLIDAYS IN AUSTRALIA ? SHOULD 19TH FEBRUARY BECOME A NATIONAL HOLIDAY?

  • Because of the significance of 19th of February ....the bombing of Darwin in WW2.... should a public holiday be set in remembrance of Australia's fallen as is done for Anzac Day?... should it be a separate day of recognition? What do you think ?

  • Answer:

BHP, regardless if it was for service at home or overseas, you have a special day over there, called Anzac Day, where you commemorate, and remember your fallen in all fields of war or peace keeping. Remembering February 19th, would set a precedent for other days to be remembered. These fallen in Darwin, should be remembered in all Anzac Day ceremonies in all of your states and territories. The first Anzac Day ceremony I was asked to attend was very moving, out does our Memorial day ceremonies. You have an organization over there called the RSL, like our Legions, let them organize it. Additional: Sorry BHP, I now can see where your going with this post, there is hardly any mention of the foiled invasion of Darwin, compared to Normandy, Dunkirk, Tubrook and Singapore. That not being heralded like other clashes is a shame, this is part of your history and should be recognized. There should be a massive letter campaign to the heads of the RSL.

Nope , sorry Phil but I can't agree...to elevate that event above all the other horrors of war is unfair to those who paid the ultimate price fighting in foreign lands.. ANZAC day is the day we remember all of those who died for our country & once we start dissecting events we dilute the purpose of that most special day.

No, ANZAC day is the focus to remember all those who fought for this country, adding another 'holiday' would detract from that

February 19th 1942 was the first of 64 bombing raids on Darwin and 33 other raids from Broome to Townsville. The last raid was on Darwin on 12 November 1943. There are ceremonies in Darwin on Feb 19 but also in Broome on 3 March when 70 people were killed in Australia's second worst raid in 1942. Remembering the events does not mean there should be a public holiday. We have a public holiday for ANZAC Day which covers all war related stuff. Remembrance Day, November 11, is not a public holiday and that should be (if we needed another) before Feb 19.

i agreee, we should remember that day plus i like public holidays :D

No. It really is a shameful day in Australia history. The Australian defence forces, in spite of reasonable intelligence, they were completely and totally unprepared for it. In addition this disaster was kept secret from the rest of the population as well, as though it never happened.

John

Not really. ANZAC day is THE day. However it would not hurt to make a mention of it as they do about the foreign places our military fought and died in.

I think that there should only be one day of work a year the "Public Work Day" - then ALL other days should be public holidays. To disagree would be un-Australian.
