The capital cities are becoming very expensive to live in. I would suggest you have $10,000 dollars to get around. petrol is very expensive at present to get around in a camper van. Check with the railwys of each state they have discount travel concessions for overseas tourists and Australians

I'd fly into Cairns, look around there for a few days, then take one of the many 'Adventure Buses' down the coast to the Gold Coast...maybe even all the way to Sydney if time allows. You'd be able to see a fair number of tourist attractions this way, see a bit of the outdoors, and meet lots of other travellers who can give you the most up-to-date info. As to costs, get a Lonely Planet and do the research thru there. There are too many variables for anyone to say (ie. anywhere from $25 a day to $5000 a day !) My short-list of places would include: (N to S) Diving the Great Barrier Reef Daintree Rainforest / Cape Trib (Beautiful scenery) Kuranda (Bungee Jumping / rainforest canopy walk) Cairns partying Whitsundays (Diving / Partying / Sailing / scenery ) Fraser Island (Camping / scenery) Gold Coast tourist attractions (Sea World / Dreamworld / surfing) Byron Bay (beautiful smallish coastal town/ surfing) Sydney (All the big city things) It's a fair old list, but lots of the places are pretty close together... Hope you enjoy your trip !

Depends on when. Late spring/Summer is the best time to go travelling, especially up in Queensland. Queensland has the Gold Coast in the south, with its beaches and club lifestyle and many themeparks; Brisbane, with its good shopping; Sunshine Coast and hinterlands nearby with old country charm and some good wine-tasting. Further north is the main tourist areas, such as the Great Barrier Reef, the Daintree and such. But because they are so popular, they can be rather expensive - flightcentre.com.au has some ideas on travel packages. Heading into central QLD will also expose you to the opal mines in Mt Isa, the stations and their jackaroos/jillaroos and possibly some unique Aboriginal settlements. the Northern Territory, adjacent to QLD, is famous for its crocs and for Uluru. You can't climb it, but it's popular and having dinner out at sunset is beautiful. Go to i7.com.au and find The Great Outdoors section - that's a good travel show that will tell you what good stuff to do in Australia

There are tons of tourist attractions in Sydney -- everything from the opera house to the little ferry boat rides that take you around their magnificent harbour. When you've done with that, head up the coast to Byron Bay, where you'll find miles of wonderful beaches, lots of great hikes anad super people to visit. Enjoy! It's a wonderful place.
