Answer:
Here is quite the same, we use mostly Magnetic strips on tickets for getting onto train stations and ferry docks and government buses. You can buy a "day tripper" ($17 for Adult, $8.60 for kids) which allows you unlimited trips on any form of public transport (government) bus, train or ferry, until 4 in the morning next day, this is realy good esp. when you want to just look around the city and not realy plan were to go. As for zones, they are mostly broken up into Operator Zones, e.g. one zone may be run by Sydney buses, another by West Bus, and another by Bus-ways. In total there are 15 zones. As for rail, it is broken up into lines, e.g. western line, Blue Mountains line, Carlingford Line, etc. as for Ferries, there are no zones that I know of, just routes.

We have single and Return tickets like most types of public transport do. These can only be used on the form of transport you purchased them from eg if you bought a return train ticket from Goulburn and you are intending to go to Central and back, you can only use it for the train between Cental and Goulburn. Anywhere else you need to buy another ticket. We also have weekly tickets for trains only, like return tickets that can be topped up at the end of the week so you don't have to keep buying tickets. As long as you are going to the same place the tivket can be reused. Prices vary depending on types of fare and how far you are traveling. The types of fares are Adult, Child, Student/Apprentice (half fare), Pensioner/Concession. We also have tickets that cover all public transport (except monorail) called DayTripper tickets or Pensioner Excursions for those who hold a valid concession card. These can be used all day in any part of the metro area (for trains that goes as far as Kiama, Newcastle, Lithgow, Scone and Goulburn. They can be used on any buses, ferries, trains, trams (the monorail is a private network).
