When do i apply for the LEGAL PRACTICE COURSE?

Questions regarding the Legal Practice Course in Australia?

  • Hello everyone. I have completed my LLB in the UK and I am considering to start my Master course and undertake the Legal Practice Course at either ANU or Uni of Sydney. I was roaming around trying to find different information about practicing as a solicitor in Australia and I was introduced to different Law Societies! Does it make a difference if I study my legal practice course in Canberra or Sydney? Will it actually limit the locations in which I can practice? Also, if I am considering to practice as a solicitor in Australia; am I required to work as a trainee before officially becoming a solicitor? The reason I'm asking is because the system in the UK requires you to work as a trainee for 2 years before becoming a solicitor. Please kindly help me with the above questions :-) Thanks :-)

    Australia still has different admission requirements in various states. However, over the past decade or so the staes have liberalised the rules for out of state practitioners practicing in various jurisdictions, and this liberalisation process is continuing. In NSW articles have been abolished and you are admitted to practice on completion of the legal practice course. I am not sure about other states.

I would go to ANU, but that's my choice because Canberra is a better,less busy city than Sydney. As far as I know you are required to serve some time as a 'trainee' in most countries before becoming a fully fledged lawyer.You would best be served by making enquiries from the law society in Australia.
