Best time to study abroad in Australia?

  • I am currently a sophomore in college and planning to study abroad at Macquarie University in Sydney and am having trouble deciding when the best time would be to go. Deadlines are approaching and I need to decide and apply asap! I can study abroad either this Fall 2010 semester (late July - early December, Springtime in Australia) or the Spring 2011 semester (mid February - late June, Autumn in Australia). What would be the best time as far as weather is concerned? What time of year is best in general (culturally, school semester, etc.)?

    There is no real difference in weather - it will either co cold/hot or hot/cold. However, since Australian students start their university experience in February, that semester has alot more of the "university" experience - orientation week is a major event for this semester - (second semester you almost would not realise it was happening) so there are alot of events, clubs, orientation activities for this semester. I would suggest you try the February intact.

There isn't much diference as to the weather either way. Spring can have a little more changeable weather and be a little bit windier, but everything is in bloom which is nice. Autumn tends to have lovely deep blue clear skies. The temperatures and rainfall for both semesters are about the same (but in reverse obviously). I think you should choose based on which season you'd prefer to miss in the US. The only other factor is there will be more new students at the start of the year (Feb -June), so it might be easier to make new friends and get established etc. The area around Macquarie Uni is very nice. Have fun :)

First semester Feb-June, more festive, new people starting out. In cultural terms, festive season usually happens between November and February, but as Autumn semester is the start of the university year it's probably better then.
