What are some must-do/see things while in Australia?
-
Me and some friends are from the United States and are going to study abroad in Sydney, Australia from early July to late November. We are trying to plan some trips for our stay in Australia. To specify, we are 20 years old and very adventurous. We are all interested in seeing the sights, the wildlife, and interacting with the many different types of people. We are already talking about visiting places such as Melbourne and Cairns. Just wanted to see if anyone could maybe help me out with some ideas. I know we can't do it all, as we wish we could, but any ideas would be helpful. I appreciate it.

Sounds exciting!! If you could hire a car, i would make a road trip from Sydney to Cairns. There are so many great places to see on that trip, but it will take a few weeks at least if you want to have enough time to enjoy the places. I would stop in Byron Bay, Gold Coast, Brisbane, Fraser island, Whitsundays, Magnetic Island and Mission beach on the way, and once up in Cairns, i would visit Kuranda, Port Douglas and Daintree rainforests, all great places around Cairns where to enjoy tropical rainforests and see some big crocodiles. It's a great trip, there are places to see wildlife, and driving is cheaper than flying, so if only you'd have the time i'd do it. Melbourne is also great, but the road trip there is not quite as full of adventurous places like the Sydney-Cairns trip. I would do Melbourne on a different trip, on a shorter trip and probably just fly there and back. it would be more convinient to do the shorter, Melbourne trip first and the big Queensland driving trip after your studies, however you'd have the seasons against you as the best time to visit north is winter (July) and the best time to visit Melbourne is summer (November-December).

Melbourne, Cairns, Gold Coast, Byron Bay and Tasmania are all great places to visit. Start with your north trips, ie visit Cairns in July, and end up south, ie visit Tasmania in November. Melbourne is a groovy city, with great bars, cafes, art etc. Cairns, or even better nearby Port Douglas, is tropical so is only nice to visit in the cooler months. There is heaps to do there, you can visit the Great Barrier Reef, the Daintree Rainforest and Daintree River to see crocodiles, and vist Kuranda with lots of tourist activities. The Gold Coast is Australia's main tourist destination, with beaches, theme parks and plenty to do. Byron Bay is a beautiful centre for alternative culture. Tasmania is scenic and packed with wildlife, and also has the very interesting and eerie Port Arthur historic site where convicts were imprisoned. You might also like to visit Uluru (Ayers Rock) to experience the outback. Have fun :)
