A few questions on sydney and australia working holiday visas?
-
me and my partner are looking to go to sydney on a working holiday visa maybe late 2010, we are hopefully going to travel with a gapyear specialist that provides you with unskilled work (hospitality/vineyards/etc) within a fortnight of being there. basically i just want as much info as possible to help us on our waym is their any special requirements/rules in order to obtain the holiday visa and i you want to stay longer than a year is it possible to extend it?? how much do you need in savings (in english pounds) to be able to travel and also to get by on cheaply? also any info on oz and sydney in general is much appreciated. thanks

Answer:
I'm not from England(i assume you are?) but i have met a lot of ppl from England who had work and holiday visa while i was travelling in Australia. They had arranged their jobs beforehand so they didnt have any troubles with it.One of them had told me that she had applied very early for the visa cuz it was hard to get it among so many ppl.I'm sorry i dont know anything about the special requirements though.I do know one thing for sure and that is; if you want to extend your work and holiday visa to two years, you have to do farm work for at least 3 months.Aussies sure know how to work ppl on the farms heh. And as for money,i'd say around 3000 pounds should be allright to support you for a year if you'll work.If not, well you need a lot more. I suggest you go there when its summer cuz its easier to find jobs in summer than in winter. Ok so this information seems all over the place but i wrote what sprang into my mind, hope i helped! :-)

Apart from needing to be of good character and health, there are no special requirements for getting a Working Holiday visa and there are no quotas (not at present anyway) so they're easy and fast to get. The cost is AUD$195 As a UK passport holder, you will be able to apply for a second 12 month visa if you do at least 3 months 'specified work' in a regional area during your first 12 months. The second visa requirements are all explained here: http://www.immi.gov.au/visitors/working-holiday/417/eligibility-second.htm You'll each be expected to have at least £2000 in addition to a return air ticket or the funds to buy one but if you have more, it will give you more freedom to travel without needing to work every week. Be prepared to stay in hostels to keep costs down, but apart from that, they're great places to meet people and to get info on places to go and where work is available. The following site has heaps of useful info plus links to the hostel chains: http://www.bugaustralia.com/essentials/ Investigate what the gap year specialists are really offering and see if it really represents good value. Most people don't need to use their expensive services.
