Who murdered those 2 students in Sydney?

I have many questions about Sydney and Macquarie, local insight would be greatly appreciated and US students t?

  • I’m am going to be going to Macquarie university for the first semester of 2010 from February – July or august. I have many questions that I need answered. How much dose the food cost on average (milk, bread, beer, or takeout food or a eat in restraint in and out of the city)? How much are goods such as clothing, backpacks, alarm clocks as compared to the united states? When I go I am trying to decide if I should buy an car for like 700-800 Australian dollars or since Macquarie put in an train station should I buy an pass even though I don’t know if they offer an unlimited pass for an half year. I read somewhere that in Australia kids to go an local university and don’t end up traveling so the university “dorm/party” life is not as promenade as it is at an big college in the United states, is this so and what type of college life is their? I was also told that it is hard for foreign exchange students to make friends with the local Australian students that the college due to a lack of university dorm living, does anyone know about this? Besides going across the coat hanger, taking an guided tour of hunters valley, doing the harbor fary, visiting the rocks, Luna park, and the opera house what would you subject I do wile I am in Sydney for my semester? What is the mindset of the Australian, I have lived in northern VA where people are often very materialistic and in Morgantown WV where the party/sports life is very active but I have no clue about what people in Sydney are like? What are the women like in Sydney, the stereotype is that they are blond and in good shape, also since they slightly outnumber men and Sydney has one of the highest gay populations in the world that there is an good number of single women in Sydney, is this an correct assumption? Finally just tell me what you know and I will be great full. Thank you for your time and I am looking forward to some true insight as to what my life will be like.

I'll try to answer your questions. Food prices: see http://grocery.bestpricedirectory.com.au for some supermarket prices. For a simple takeaway or restaurant meal such as Chinese expect to pay around $10-$15/dish, pizza pay around $10 each. A nice restaurant meal may be $20-$35 for a main course. Other goods will be similar or a little dearer than in the US. Cars in Australia are expensive, an $800 car will be very old, and you will also have to pay to register it, plus petrol is dearer here. If you're on a budget stick to public transport. http://www.cityrail.info/fares/commuter_tickets.jsp It's true there isn't too much dorm/party life at Aussie unis. You make friends and go out with them, but you don't generally party at the university itself. It's not hard to make friends though and you'll have plenty of fun. I suggest you visit the tropical north before you leave if you can afford it (Cairns/Port Douglas), go in winter (July, August). I'd suggest going to the beach at least a few times, and going to watch or even play some sports you're not very familiar with, eg cricket, Rugby League football, netball, Australian Rules footaball. Also do a trip to the Blue Mountains. Australians tend to be very casual and dislike formality, love sports, not very religious at all, love traveling, and enjoy a joke. They tend to be what Americans call 'liberal'. Australia is very multicutural, so the sterotype of blond surfer isn't really correct, Aussies are very diverse. There is a high gay population in Sydney, it's one of the gay capitals of the world. There are plenty of single women, it's a big city.

NEVER trust the train timetables, as any local will agree ( i'm an aussie, used to live in sydney for 13 years) as they are works of fiction. for clothes, good clothes can easily be found at target, k-mart etc.they arent fancy brands, but they do a great job and last ages. there are very few parties in universities, as it's usually mellow. the average aussie's mindset is quite mellow, but if you are rude or insulting towards the australian culture they will get angry. i mean ANGRY. most are happy to make friends, and dont be shy to go into town(outside the campus) and explore. yes, sydney has a lot of those little gay shits, but if you stay away from the scummier areas of sydney, like king's cross, you'll be fine. as for buying a car, dont expect NRMA( the national road service) to be rushing down quickly to where your stranded if the car breaks down. 800 aussie will get you a beater to an okay car. make sure the car is in good condition, and that it doesnt break down easily. i wouldn't bother too much about the trains, rather invest in a good car, (second hand of course) so that there's less chance of breakdowns, etc. also, you'll probably be doing a lot of travelling, so a car is a better idea than public transport, especially for long distance. if your really worried about staying in the dorms. find a cheap apartment to rent with roomates. if that doesnt suit you, the dorms are usually quite friendly, and generally a safer bet while you find your bearings in australia. sorry that i cant answer your other questions, and i probably went on for a bit too long, but good luck, and enjoy your stay in australia.

I won't answer all your questions but I'll try to address a couple: Personally I wouldn't buy a car. A $800au car is more trouble than it's worth and public transport is very good. You can get most places on a train or bus and hopefully you'll make a friend or two with a car. If you are smart with your money you should be able to feed yourself for about $100au per week. Although that wouldn't include going out or alcohol. Try and bring a backpack and clothes with you as these items are more expensive in Australia. You will find the other students to be friendly and just get involved in Uni life. As you said there are a lot of nice single girls in Sydney. All the best!

The Australian Uni culture and people are very different to what you would be used to in the US. Firstly we dont have 'dorm parties' we have general parties or uni students go clubbing in the city during happy hour using student cards for discount alcohol. As for food, Im unsure what it is like on the uni campus but you can buy a pizza at dominos for $8 pickup or mackas or rice from a restraunt. as a student your best options would be to buy some groceries and make your own food. Beer depending on what you drink are all diff prices i know you can get 3 long necks for around $12. Average spend on vodka between $25-40 a bottle. Wild Turkey $37-50. Sydney has a large group of people of all sexual orientations. There are plenty of single women. Although Sydney is a busy hectic place and there are some materialistic people - we are still VERY laid back - in macquarie there are alot of cultures or races - its not has hectic as the city. For tourist Ideas, i suggest going to the zoo, all the beaches, go diving, clubbing, bar hoping and go to a few aussie festivals. Good luck
