Is Melbourne really that much cheaper to live than Sydney?

Im planning to study a course in Ausralia and eventually live there. Im torn between Melbourne and Sydney?

• I don't mind the cold weather but what Im looking for is the culture and people. I heard Sydney's got a better weather, good beaches, more urban but expensive as well. My cousin from Sydney says Melbourne is boring but i've read from other people that Melbourne's culture is better? Help, I cant decide

  Contentious question. I live in Sydney but prefer Melbourne infinitely. It's just better, the people are warm and passionate about culture, the food is great, the nightlife scene far outrivals Sydney's and the youth of Melbourne are less apathetic about politics and community (totally IMO). And there are some great surf beaches in Victoria..., not necessarily Melbourne. It is cheaper too. I wish I could live in Melbourne but my family is here etc.. Choose Melbourne (but do come visit us up in Sydney ;) )
