What is the difference between the Master of Commerce degrees and the MBA degrees in Australia?

What's the difference between a Master's degree by research and one by coursework in Australia?

  • Is it worth it to get either or and how long do they take? I am looking into the masters degrees in business. Apparently the master's by research seem to have a thesis build into it. I am completely unfamiliar with these degrees as I am just used to the American system with bachelors, MBA, and phd's. what exactly would I need which degree for? and is the masters by coursework in australia comparable to a bachelor's with honors or is it regarded better?

    Masters by coursework - means that you just do subjects that comprise of both undergraduate subjects but with extra assignments (you are in a class with undergrads) and some postgrad subjects (where all students are postgrads). Masters by research is a research project only you get assigned a department to conduct a research project in. Its like a mini PhD. If you have not an honours degree you need a research Masters first before you can upgrade to a PhD. If you are in a profession degree area - like business - then a coursework one is better. If you are planning to go into research of any type - Research degree is better.

To answer the additional details ... As an answer No, you don't always need a masters to do a PhD...if you get high enough marks in your Honours you can go straight on to your PhD. Otherwise you do Honours, Masters then PhD. If you're already in the workforce and its been a while since you have studied -- Uni's normally recommend you do Masters (by Coursework) and then do your PhD But the best thing to do is decide on a program or which University you want to do it at and then contact the Postgraduate Studies office and they can answer all your questions and help you with your enrolment!
