How is Australian weather in January?
-
My family is planning a visit to Australia this next year. We want to go to both Melbourne and Sydney. It will be my me, my sister and my mom. My mom has mobility problems so she will be on a wheelchair for many of the sites we are going to. One of our options is to go for about 10 days in January. Will the weather be too hot? We come from a tropical country so we are used to hot weather. However, I am concerned about how hot the sun can get if we go around sightseeing and if it will be too much for my mom. And if January is not a good time, what can you suggest as an alternative date?

Answer:
Sunny but can be extremely hot on some days. It is only Spring at the moment and today many parts of Australia are reaching temperatures of over 100 degrees. In summer it could be warmer.

Melbourne stats from the Bureau of Meteorology http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/averages/tables/cw_086071.shtml Sydney stats from the Bureau of Meteorology http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/averages/tables/cw_066062.shtml Personally I think March-April would be the best time. Lower temperatures and humidity. The water is still warm enough to swim.

Its very hot with the temperature usually 40 degrees or 104 degrees farenheit. The sun is also much stronger than anywhere in the world because there is a whole in the ozone layer right above australia.

It is quite hot during January. It's a different kind of heat to that from Philippines (if you've been there or if that's where you're coming from). I suggest, like others here, that March-April would be a better time of year to visit. Perhaps early March if you still want to catch some of the summer warmth. I hope you have a great time!

January is a fantastic time to visit Sydney, especially as the Sydney Festival would be running, which makes the city alot more lively, and most people are off work and relaxing more. There is a fantastic vibe in sydney in the summer and especially summer after the christmas /new years craziness. Having said that Feb is also good as well as March, But the Sydney Festival runs in Jan only. If you are from a tropical climate im sure you can handle the temperatures, however tropical temps can be constant, Sydney can hit 40C (105 F) often. I recommend a hire car if your exploring Sydney to make things easier for your mother in Sydney as public transport can be a bit ****. Other noteworthy dates in summer: 26th of Jan = Australia Day, lots of celebrations 1st Sunday in March = Mardi Gras Melbs not by speciality but should be relatively fine in summer
