Where are free camping sites in NSW?

Camping at Myall Lakes (NSW, Australia) at Christmas time? PLZ HELP :(?

• OMG I need help!!!!! My partner and I are planning to go camping at Christmas. I want to know more about camping at Myall Lakes. It says on the National Parks website that no bookings are taken, it is a 'first in first served' basis. I am new to camping, so I don't know how it works, do they stop letting people in at a certain point? We were hoping to have a relatively inexpensive camping holiday, leaving on Boxing Day. And I thought Myall Lakes might be a nice place to go. But is it possible we won't be able to get in? If so, would arriving the day BEFORE Christmas instead make a big difference and be a better choice? I've heard people say you should book at a caravan park just in case, is that true? And if so, do you need to put a down payment when booking a caravan and/or lose any money if you end up getting into the national park and cancelling the caravan park booking? If anyone out there who's been to this national park or knows what it's like at xmas, i would be soooooooooo grateful and give you a 5 star rating xxx

  Going the day before Christmas is probably a better idea, if you don't mind a camping Christmas :) EVERYONE arrives on boxing day and the day after. So you'd likely get a spot if you got in that early :) I know it gets pretty packed, but I'm not sure if they stop letting people in after a certain point. Perhaps ring them the day before you're going to go, and see if they're very full? If so, you could make a back-up reservation at a caravan park. Most places won't require a down-payment or deposit until you arrive there, or have a cancellation fee. Have a nice holiday :)
