Is there a lot of industry and Automation(PLC) jobs in New Zealand?

Which town in New Zealand would be best to live in?How about jobs?

  • Hello! My husband just got a job offer from New Zealand,so if we decide to move there we would probably live in Queenstown. My husband is now thinking about getting residency in NZ in future as well.I'm still unsure if it's the right decision but for now it's ok.However,if we move there permanently I would like to know which town or city is the best?We both like it sunny and my husband loves to surf so a place close to the beach would be great I guess.I read that most jobs would be in Auckland and smaller cities/towns wouldnt have many.My husband has a masters degree in business and currently works as a manager for a Japanese trading company, would there be any jobs related to that in other places than the main cities?Any advice greatly appreciated!Thank you :-)

  • Answer:

Queenstown's just a small tourist town. It doesn't offer much employment beyond hospitality. If you like surf and judging by your qualifications Christchurch could be your best choice, then Auckland which would have more opportunities. There could be many opportunities in Wellington but it isn't so blessed with beaches and surf or sunny weather.

Queenstown is nice, but it's really a gigantic tourist destination more than a place to live year round. It's a pretty small town, and it's a day's travel to anywhere else. You're not going to get any surf there. http://maps.google.com/maps?oe=&ie=UTF8&q=queenstown+new+zealand&fb=1&gl=us&ei=c-SKS6SRBZ6GyATYja3dAg&ved=0CBcQpQY&hl=en&view=map&geocode=FUDhUP0dy5YNCg&split=0&hq=&hnear=Queenstown,+Otago,+New+Zealand&ll=-45.046359,168.662109&spn=2.150135,3.315125&z=9 The north and south islands are very different. NZ is actually quite a large country, with a wide range of climate and terrain. Most New Zealanders live in and around Auckland, where it's much warmer than the south island. Auckland is the only truly international city in NZ. Personally, I like Christchurch. It does have surf and you could live close to the beach. The city itself is beautiful and has a university, many fine restaurants and cafes, and some arts and theater.

Queenstown is a fun touristy town and its so beautifully placed. I would live there for sure. I live in Christchurch at the moment but I usually live in Australia. I think it depends on your lifestyle. Wellington is upbeat and more liberal then Christchurch.. but Christchuch is a pretty town but a bit boring (but we have the mountains close). Go with Queenstown. You wont regret it. (as long as your into skiiing/snowboarding!)

Queenstown is a great choice. It's about time, some people went to live in the South Island.

Being a born and bred South Islander I like the South Island better. Christchurch is now the second largest city in New Zealand. Its often called a city more English than England and there is an element of truth there, but there is also influences from other cultures as well (eg Asain and I know there are significant Somali and Afghani populations among others) Christchurch claims you can ski and surf in the same day and its true you could with several skifields within a couple of hours drive and the coast close to Chch ( in fact some suburbs are on water eg Sumner, New Brighton (not as nice in general as a place to live). Being a large city it offers things smaller places cannot, but its not THAT big (especially compared to overseas large cities). There are lots of sports available to play and see as well. There are some towns you can live close to Chch and not live in the city eg Rangiora, Rolleston, Lincoln even, so you can have country/or close to the country and big city for work.
