  • okay, So I am trying to plan a get away for myself next summer... I am trying to find flight tickets, one way to new zealand.. but I have one problem! I don't know what area to start in... here are my choice's of places with airports: Auckland, New Zealand Blenheim, New Zealand Christchurch, New Zealand Dunedin, New Zealand Gisborne, New Zealand Hamilton, New Zealand Hokitika, New Zealand Invercargill, New Zealand Kaitaia, New Zealand Kerikeri, New Zealand I don't really want to do the whole tourist thing if you catch my drift, I'd rather backpack, and just explore... also this will be my first out of country trip, and yeah! any advice would really help!! thanks so much!

You don't say where you are flying from but the only two international airports you would fly into are Auckland or Christchurch. If you are flying from Australia you could also fly in to Hamilton or Rotorua. You would then need connecting flights to the other places mentioned. Your best idea is to fly into Auckland and out from Christchurch or the reverse. Then travel around the country however you like. Bus passes can be good if you are back packing and using public transport. Have a look at the different options here - http://www.holidays-in-newzealand.com/new-zealand-bus-travel.html You are unlikely to be allowed to enter on a one way ticket if you are entering as a tourist.Only those with long term work visas would be allowed a one way ticket. You will then need to plan your itinerary based on how long you have. While you may want to backpack with no real time ties you will no doubt want to see and do certain things and unless you have some months will need to do some kind of planning to ensure you get to the destinations you want to spend time in.

Go with what's cheapest and take a bus from there. I like the south island mo betta. Watch out for sandflies, bring bug juice or you'll be sorry. Don't miss the abel tasman trail. Nelson and top o' the south island is great area.

If you are coming to New Zealand as a tourist and only buying a one way ticket I suggest you check with New Zealand Immigration first. I have this feeling they might not let you into the country.

Definatly fly to either Auckland or christchurch..If you start from Auckland you can work your way up to the north island, then back down to auckland head towards wellington catch a ferry to picton which is the top of the south island, and same thing work you way down towards the south island, both islands are very beautiful with plenty of back packers..You wont be disappointed with new zealand is beautiful.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mxy0NHYV9ew click the above link gives a promo of auckland..

fly into Auckland, it the best city in New Zealand by far. You will be able to catch transport and tours around the north island easily from Auckland and you can fly between islands for a very reasonable price! The ferry will cost you $100 or you can fly for $49! But enjoy our country and make sure you go sky diving!! oh and Hamilton has an amazing nightlife so check that out for sure, I am currently living in Hamilton for university and love it. Have an awesome experience in our country buddy!!

Two way tickets are cheaper and immigration would see one-way as a suspicion you will overstay. Where you come and go does not matter much but good luck finding international flights into Hokitika. My plan - fly in to Auckland. pick up a rental and do a trip to Rotorua/Taupo/Waitomo That is about 4 nights - add on Taranaki and Wanganui if you have more time before going back to Auckland and dropping off the rental. Fly to Christchurch. another rental and drive to Queenstown and up the West Coast - about 5 days. Add in Milford Sound, Dunedin, Kaikoura if you have time and fly out of Christchurch. Total about 10 days but it could take a month. Two rentals means you return cars to base - small rental companies are cheaper and prefer this. You also avoid paying for a two way car trip across the Cook Strait.

Hey, i live in New Zealand ! I love it so much here, i think its one of the best countries ! Well I live in Hamilton, but i think that you should catch the plane to Auckland airport, then go up North to Cape Reigna. Then you can start from the top on N.Z. And then when you reach Wellington, catch the Ferry to the top of the South Island, then make your way ta Bluff, right at the bottom. Lol yeah well you dont have ta do that, but i reckon it would be cool to see New Zealand from start to finish ! Hope i helped ! :) :) :)

firstly, all visitors are tourists even if they are carrying a backpack. Head out the of Lonely Planet please. :-) secondly, return ticket or you won't get in. I have been asked to prove funds and show a return ticket when going to NZ. thirdly, you don't get international flights to all these airports. Start in Auckland or Christchurch. My preference is for Christchurch as I prefer the South island, but plenty to see on both. enjoy.

I started in Christchurch, but Auckland is good as well. Other cities are usually more expensive to fly into. It also depends on what you prefer. If you want more coast and beaches, I'd start with (and focus on) the North Island. If you prefer mountains, then start in Christchurch.
