    There are many tricks of the trade here. I've read if your in a pinch, one way to disinfect water is to fill a gallon bottle and let it sit in the sunshine for a complete day and the UV will kill 99.9% of any nasty microbes. I've also heard that letting a water bottle sit in sunshine causes the plastic to release dioxin. In that case, I'd only do it in a pinch.

Boil it for 1/2 hour. Or chuck in a couple of drops of iodine/litre... this kills most things, but not giardia.
