Going to a pub or bar on a night other than a Friday or Saturday will stop that being a problem. There is a nice pub at the top of Melbourne Central as well as a cocktail bar. The Lygon street area has a number of nice bars as well and I also like The Elephant and Wheelbarrow in Bourke st. Sydney Rd in Brunswick also has a number of bars with nice beer gardens out the back where you can have a nice chat.
