How much money will it take to travel from Adelaide to Melbourne?

Driving from Melbourne to Adelaide. Are 4 days enough?

  • Hi! I'm planning to do an extensive roadtrip through eastern Australia but would need some travel advice especially on time management. I've got about 13 days to visit Melbourne, go to Tasmania (another short campingtrip there) and drive all the way to Adelaide. As it is planned now, I would spend one day exploring Melbourne and fly into Hobart the next morning to spend six days doing a roadtrip in Tasmania. As soon as I'm back in Melbourne I'd like to start driving towards Adelaide. For this distance I have scheduled 4 days, adding another one for kangaroo island and a sixth that can be spent in Adelaide. What do you guys think about that? I would love to take it slower and spend more time at the individual places but I'm afraid that's not possible because I'll have to go to Cairns after that. Is it at least somehow sufficient to get quite an insight in this part of the country? I'm more of a nature and bushwalking person anyways so I thought I could cut the city time short. Please let me know if you have advice for me! It would also help me a lot if you knew a couple of beautyful places that I definitely shouldn't miss. Thanks a lot!

Spend one or even two days less on the Melbourne to Adelaide trip, and one more day in Kangaroo Island - it's a great place to visit and much bigger than you might think. Much of the Melbourne to Adelaide trip is dry and uninteresting after you finish the Great Ocean Road. Naracoorte's a good place to stop on the way to Adelaide if you go that direction, it has some interesting fossil caves. If you want to see the best ones then you should book in advance. There isn't much to do in Adelaide really. If you can fit in in somehow you might like to include a trip to the Flinders Ranges. Warrawong Sanctuary in the Adelaide hills is worth a visit, even for Aussies who've 'seen it all before'. Tasmania is excellent, don't cut it short.

Easy. The drive without touristing is a long day, or two shorter days. I woould take a couple of days tootling along the Great Ocean Road then take a jag north at Warnambool to the Grampians for a while, then head to Adelaide via Mt Gambier or the Adelaide Hills.

You're going to be driving at a snails pace then? It should only take 8-10 hours driving plus maybe 2 hours breaks to drive from Melbourne to Adelaide. Unless the 4 days includes stops along the way to sleep or do something fun in each town you pass through?

4 days is way too long for Melbourne to Adelaide. Even assuming you go via the Great Ocean Road (which is certainly well worth doing, sites like the 12 Apostles are breathtaking), after the Great Ocean Road it's not a very interesting drive and you can do it all in 2 days. On the other hand, 1 day is way too little for Kangaroo Island! It's like 1.5 hours from Adelaide to the ferry, and another (from memory) 1.5 - 2 hours to get to the end of the island (which is well worth doing, to see Admiral's Arch and Remarkable Rocks)... and then back again, all in one day, well you work it out, it's an insanely long day. Plan at least one night on K.I. There's not a real lot to do in Adelaide that you can't do elsewhere. You can go up to Mount Lofty and see the city. You can go to the zoo and see the only pandas in Australia.

having been thru this neck of the woods n understand your expectations may i suggest the following...drive the great ocean rd to mount gambier....plenty forest just b4 to camp...no fires....then head up to rockland reservoir... good camps...no fires..then up to hattah-kulkyne nat park..good camps ...no fires in fire season... then mildura n over to renmark...camp sites along river...lake cullaraine..then down to adelaide via blanchtown...good country... better than highways n traffic....google earth to have a look 1st...distances might be a chomp out of your schedule ... but you could give k.i. a miss..enjoy
