Where is the cheapest place to live in melbourne?

  • hello everyone ^_^ i'm currently looking for a job in melbourne, and even though where i live is fine, i'm thinking that it would be a better idea to live closer to the city. i'm just wondering where not only the cheapet place to live would be, but also somewhere close to public transport because i dont drive. And if it isnt too much to ask, a summery of the reputation the place has would be helpful too, i dont know may places in melbourne all that well, and i dont like the idea of living next door to a shady sort of person =( thank you in advace for your help PS: i'm sorry about the spelling/grammar mistakes that i'm sure at least one person reading this has noticed =P

    I was born in and continue to live in Melbourne. As the person said above, it helps to know where exactly your job is because Melb is a huge city. In melbourne the cheaper places are often far away from the city. Melbourne has an extensive public transport network so pretty much anywhere you live will be close, but having a train line nearby is much easier than having a bus or tram, although all three is ideal. For cheaper inner city areas I would probably suggest suburbs such as Fitzroy, Collingwood, Abbotsford and Carlton but even then to buy a decent house will set you back about AUD500,000 for a small two bedroomed house. Rental wise would probably cost about $300 a week. There are some areas of these suburbs that are a bit shady but there are also some nicer areas, but anywhere inner city will probably have some dodgy areas because of all the bars and clubs. If you wanted to buy a house or rent a house thats not too close to the city but is close to the train line, look at areas like lilydale, belgrave, blackburn, box hill. Once again though because these places are cheaper you are still not in the safest place. The best places to live in Melbourne are the inner eastern suburbs between South Yarra and Canterbury, including Toorak, Camberwell, Kew, Hawthorn, Malvern, Armadale, Surrey Hills but these are the top suburbs in Melbourne so are generally quite expensive - but they are a lot safer and beautiful neighbourhoods! Well, obviously the inner the suburb the more expensive it will be. Perhaps you should try Werribee which is really quite cheap, most people are nice and pleasant, and there are buses and train stations close by. Or, if you can spend more you might like to try Altona, Newport, Spotswood or even Laverton.

A couple of suburbs to avoid - dandenong & springvale - trains are not that safe to travel on out that way and the stations are not very secure especially if you have to travel at night.Druggies and muggers walk the area looking for "victims"

Hi! I could advise you very well, but I'd need further details, such as where your job is likely to be located, as "the city" is a pretty big area. (just name the nearest intersection.) All the areas close to the city are expensive, as people pay extra for the convenience. There's a lot of competition for access to public transport, too. You can email me if you like. I've lived in Melb since the late 70s and worked all over the place.
