  The closest to Melbourne, and the most family friendly, is Mt Buller. If you get up early, you can do is as a day trip. Other than that, you'll need to go to Mt Hotham or Falls Creek - they're both about equal distance from Melbourne, and quite close to each other. A good option is to stay in Bright, which is basically between the two moutnains, and then you can check the weather/snow at each mountain on the morning and just drive to the one that is better. Of the two, my personal perspective is that Hotham is possibly more family friendly, in that it has some areas around the 'big D' good for kids etc, but both of them would be fine. They're all pretty similar in terms of cost and the quality of ski schools etc: as in any ski field the world over, they're generally staffed by people who shift from ski field to ski field depending on the season, and the classes are great.
