Can I get into melbourne university?
-
Okay so im a senior in a public high school in the U.S.. I feel like I can get into Melboune University in Australia. But I heard if u are going to study oversees it wont work because undergraduate is only three years there whereas in the u.s. its 4. Does this mean I have to go to a college in the states for one year, or is there some type of way i can continue my studies in Australia right after high school (Melbourne Univ) Also i heard if u go to australia directly, u have to do something extra b4 college idk what though? And in terms of life style whats melbourne like? Also for international students, is it easier to get in than citizen students? and is melbourne easy to get into in general?

Answer:
Melboune University is the top university in Australia so bare in mind there will be a lot of competition. For your first point, no, you will not have to study an extra year. A 3 year bachelor degree in Australia is actually equivalent to a 4 year degree in the USA. The main difference is in the US the first year has a lot of general subjects whereas in Australia the degree goes straight into the study area. A friend of mine studying business in the US finished her first year without doing a single business subject. In Australia ALL the first year subjects would be business. I don't know what you could be talking about with your second point. I went straight from High School to University in Australia with nothing in between. Some people go to tafe (like Community college in the US) because they can't get into the course they want straight away, but most go straight into University. Melbourne is a little bit different to most Australian cities. It has a real European feel about it and is known for its botique shops and cafes. It has a good reputation for creativity and the arts, essentially Australia's capital of fashion, art and drama. There are some great places to visit and great opportunities to experience Australian culture. It's not as laid back as other Australian cities and often other Australians see the people as a little pretentious. But personally I like it (I'm from Brisbane). It's a little bit harder for international students to get in than Australian citizens, but this isn't unusual. Most universities around the world have preferences for their own country's students. As you are from the US you will not have to worry about language skills tests (unless you are from a non-english speaking background). The link I have provided below shoes the entry requirements with a special link for US requirements. As a summary you should have a GPA of at least 3.0 to get into the most basic courses (some of the courses requiring up to a 3.5) with a better GPA giving you a better chance of getting in. As well as this you shold aim for an SAT score of at least 1740 (again some of the courses expect a score over 1900). Melbourne is faily accessible and is a major Australian city so there is a lot of domestic and international flights to and from the city. I have a friend living in Melbourne in share-house for fairly cheap rent and it only takes him 45mins to get to the centre of the city. Also bare in mind Australia has a higher cost of living than the US, so what I call fairly cheap rent might not be as cheap for you. Hope this helps :)
