Whats it like to live in Melbourne, Australia?

  • I live in the United States and I'm getting sick of our politics, economy, and being in the midwest isn't helping (Winter's here are brutal) I was wondering what it was like to live in Melbourne? I'm Greek and my aunt's god-sisters live there and they love it, but we can't contact them because they don't have our number. But I know i should visit the country first but from the research i've done I know I'd like it. I'm 18 now finishing High school and starting college next year, I plan on pursuing the medical field (Radiologic Technologist!) and if all goes well I'd like to visit or deeply consider on moving there. So whats it like to live there? I'm an artistic person too so I know I'd love the city itself. Also I heard that moving to Australia you have to have a degree in something in order to move there and have permanent residency? I just heard about that so I don't know, but if someone could tell me how that process works on getting permanent residency?

    When you have graduated in radiology i think your chances of finding employment here are probably pretty good. You need to find a job first, and to make sure that your occupation is one that is on our list of preferred migrant occupations. You can get all of this information from the Australian embassy in the USA. Your employers can sponsor you to work here, and you will need to get the appropriate visa. There are a lot of public and private hospitals in Australia who are desperately short of staff. When you are part way through your degree, or just after graduation, why don't you come for a visit and suss out the situation, so that you know whether you like it here. Melbourne is a terrific place to live (lived there for many years), and there is a strong Greek community there. Your chances of obtaining a job though, may be greater in one of our regional centres. You could look at somewhere that is maybe an hour or so's drive from Melbourne, such as Ballarat, Geelong, Bendigo, Frankston, Mornington. All of these places have hospitals and would be needing people in radiology.

Being Greek and artistic, you will feel right at home in Melbourne. In fact, Melbourne has the largest Greek population in the world outside of Greece!! Melbourne is an art & design city. Art and music are a couple of the core attributes that make up Melbourne's psyche. There are hundreds of galleries (some of the best are hidden away in laneways, which are also fun to explore) throughout the CBD and the inner suburbs. There are numerous art and music festivals held throughout the year as well. You will love Melbourne. I was only there for a couple of weeks during a holiday, but could easily have wanted to stay permanently. Having some family there already will definitely help you settle quickly. Get your qualifications, and even better if you can get some experience, before you go. Spud, now what you mean about the cold, we are minus 28 right now, and dropping. You couldn't go wrong with Melbourne, Sydney or Brisbane for what it's worth, you will enjoy Melbourne, very large greek community as there is in Sydney I found. As for your future plans, at the moment, the medical field is hot on the agenda in Australia, but when you graduate, you need a couple of years of experience under your belt before applying to Australia, try and specialize. I am also going to tell you to make an appointment with the Australian Embassy in DC, and have a talk to them, I believe, they also have an office in New York, your better off checking on that. You don't have to do this till it's closer to time, as the criteria and the points system changes.. In the mean time save money as much as you can, your going to need it initially for an apartment to set yourself up, and keep you going till you have a steady salary coming in. Melbourne is amazing. (I live here, but that's seriously not biased) You will love it if you're artistic! ...By point system I assume you mean scores for uni ? We have VCE here. After you finish yr12 you get an ATAR. I'd recommend Melbourne Uni for medicine. You need an ATAR of about 90. You need to convert your US score into an ATAR one.
