Where is the best place to take my family on a camping trip?

Where is a great place to go camping in Victoria?

  • I want to take the family on a camping trip but not sure which is the best place to go in Victoria?

  • Answer:

The Grampians are a beautiful spot. When you get there, steer clear of (or at least, don't stay in) the towns like Halls Gap, but go out along the tourist road a bit further...there are a lot of basic but free and natural campsites right in the national park and they're great! Especially Jimmy's Creek and the Wannon Creek campgrounds. If you need a map to find them, call into the Parks offices in Stawell and Halls Gap...they'll help! (Stawell's worth a look - it was built as a gold mining town like many but the big difference is, it still is a gold mining town - there's an active mine there running and has viewpoints - worth a look! I lived in Stawell for a year and worked at the mine - every day, people came to see it) Also, if you want to go further west into the Wimmera region, the Little Desert Park and Wyperfeld National Park (up near Nhill/Jeparit) are quite beautiful, there are sandhills for the kids to slide down and its very quiet there as they are often forgotten spots!

Wilson's Prom and the Grampians are nice, very beautiful and popular places where it's easy to find a camping sites and there are plenty of things to do. Mallacoota inlet and Croajingolong national park are highly recommended also, especially in Summer. Eden, Lake Jindabyne, Mt Kosciusko/Kosciusko national park. If you don't mind a bit of travelling Mt Gambier is also nice, and if you've got kids you could go to the sand dunes at Millicent which are great fun. This is in SA however, but you can drive up if you've got time.

Seaspray is a great place to go. Beautiful beaches and if you go at the right time, not a soul around you. It might be more bush than you want though. No camping sites with power but a great place to go.

The Cathedral Ranges, nearish Mansfield, are also great. We used to go there a lot.
