Whats it like living in Darwin, NT compared to Northern England? Other than roasting...?

I'm seriously considering a change of scenery for my family. I am hoping for an opportunity to get a job out at Wickham Point, near Darwin and would need to move my wife and two kids, 17 & 13 out there also. My main reasons and concerns about such a drastic change are: 1) The UK offers little to school leavers, my eldest isn't interested in University and simply wants to start work and my youngest needs to finish his education and then hopefully go onto some opportunities - which the UK has minimal! How is Darwin placed in this respect??? 2) I want to improve our quality of life and a little sunshine would go a good ways to doing just that. I now about the tropical heat but feel a dip in a pool and some air conditioning would make that bearable but what about mosquitoes and the problems the heat and humidity bring - are they a major pain out there? 3) Crime - is it a major problem in Darwin or just normal? 4) The Sea - by all accounts is best avoided, which is a great shame but are there not any secure swimming areas in the sea where they are netted off or anything? Are there any charges for the public swimming areas? 5) Shopping - with a wife and a daughter they are concerned that they'll be stuck in the back of beyond and not be able to shop for the usual crap - which is what they naturally like to do with my money! 6) House - I know its expensive but which suburbs or were would you recommend locating a family like mine out there bearing in mind my need to get to Wickham Point and their need for schools, nightlife and all the other trappings teenagers and folk from populated places come to expect! 7) Does demand really outweigh supply out there and when it comes to shopping how big a problem can that realistically be? Realise this is a broad and expansive question but would appreciate someone in the know taking the time out to guide and educate me in what would be a massive decision for us. Appreciate any advise you can send my way!

Answer:
I live in WA and i would strongly suggest you come for a holiday before emigrating. You will have to be quick as your 17 year old may not be considered on your application if he starts work (no longer dependent). http://www.immi.gov.au/ http://www.darwin.nt.gov.au/live http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darwin,_Northern_Territory http://www.darwineguide.com/orientation.php Darwin has two seasons dry (winter) wet (summer).

No one can give you are definite answer on this question as Darwin is completly opposite and extremely different to the UK. I have lived in both places and I love Darwin but really from September to April life is a challenge. !3 and 17 is those ages that to up root them from their friends I think you will get a lot of slack from them unless they are very adventurist and accomodating to big changes. Your wife may be miserable there but that depends on her nature as well . Personally if someone said to me where would you like to live Darwin or the UK I would choose Darwin but many wouldn't. People that go to Darwin either love it or hate it. Some go and never leave others get out real quick. Crime is not a major problem . There is Crime of course and some of the Aboriginal people get drunk there they come into town from their communities where they cant drink and let their hair down when they come in but normally any problems with them are kept in house. And most of them although you will be a bit wary of them they can be really nice interesting people. There are good swimming places in Darwin one stays away from Rivers there of course, [Crocs} but the public pools are great. The shopping is ok but not near as good as somewhere like The Gold Coast QLd. There is more jobs available just before the dry season or tourist season in april
