What supermarket do you prefer in New Zealand? and Why?

Cheapest supermarket in Christchurch, New Zealand ?

  • What is the difference between Countdown, woolworths, New World and Pak n Save ? Which one is cheaper for the average budget minded person ? Secondly is it cheaper to buy meats from special butcher stores or from the supermarket ?

  • Answer:

Pak n Save is the cheapest, just take your own bags as they charge for plastic bags but they provide boxes. Also countdown is good too :)

Pak n save is the cheapest, then countdown. Countdown and woolworths are run by the same company/owners and you get your groceries packed there for you. At pac n save you have to pack your own groceries after purchase. Butchers really can't compete with the price of meat at a supermarket and don't hvae such a high turn over with there products. The "mad butcher" in christchurch is very good value in Christchurch. Hope that helps.

Pak n Save is the cheapest through out NZ. Shop around for bargains though. Often they will have some things at super low prices to draw you in, to do the rest of your shopping there. Get the fliers and go through them and make a shopping list and go from store to store. Local butchers as a rule can't match the supermarkets. It may mean getting mince at Countdown, Steak at New World and Chicken at Pak n Save. Supervalue seem good for vegetables.

IDK, but you should have asked this in a better category. When the hell do people actaually ask questions here. I mean like OMG, this place is a ghost town.

Pak 'n Save is the cheapest, but they also have a limited line of stock. They also (at Moorhouse Ave anyway) have a Gas Station. It pays to check out the fliers each week in the mail for bargains. All supermarkets are doing a 4c per liter discount with gas stations if you spend over ... I think it's $40. Also check out how far a cheaper market its What you save could be eaten up in time and petrol. For special occasions I 'sanity shop'. I go to a more expensive supermarket early morning ... paying a little more and no crowds or queues and screaming children. All supermarkets make big price mark-ups on Fruit/vegetables, Meat, Delicatessen and Bakery lines. The 'House Brands' like Pams or Signature Range are usually excellent value for your $. They draw you in with the specials which are usually sold at cost. It pays to shop around at places like Mad Butcher for meat and Raewoods or Funky Pumpkin for fruit and veg. Bakers delight do nice bread and have a loyalty card, also discounts on rolls if you buy 10 - things like that.
