Best spots for fishing near brisbane?

Good fishing spots in brisbane?

  • Hi there! I recently moved to brisbane and I absolutely love fishing! But there seems to be no good spots near where I live (western suburbs). Is there a place close by where I can go fishing without travelling too far? Is the brisbane river safe to fish in, because I heard the water there is quite dirty - and all you catch is catfish. By the way I do not have a boat. And what bait do the fish like here? Thanks!

Well, I don't think you'll find too many places to cast a line around the western suburbs. In the Brisbane River you might catch catfish & other bottom feeders. Good fishing however around the mouth of the river but you'll have to find someone with local knowledge to pick out the spots. Without a boat obviously the bay and its islands are out, so you have to look to the suburban areas around Moreton Bay, such as Beachmere, Redcliffe, Shorncliffe, Nudgee Beach, up to Bribie Island to the north, and Wynnum/Manly, Victoria Point etc to the south. Suggest you join an amateur fishing club of which there are quite a few - do a search for Brisbane fishing clubs and see what comes up. Many of them would have organised trips or advice.

To be honest I think South East Queensland is fished out. I don't know anybody personally who has caught a keepable fish in the last three years and most of my friends are avid fishers! We've tried every spot in that book of fishing hotspots you buy from BCF at all different times of the day (predawn, full light, midnight, twilight) and at all the variations of the tides and the biggest thing we've caught as been a ten cm toadfish at nudgee. I honestly suspect those 'catch of the days' they show on tv are fakes, purchased fish that are used to lull idiots like me into thinking we have a chance of catching something!

If it's shore fishing the get up to Pumicestone Passage. Or over to Stradbroke or Moreton Islands. To be honest I haven't hauled in a decent fish for years. At the right time on Straddie you'll get fish... but you'll need a 4WD. You'll never go too wrong with live worms or prawns. Bream are pretty easy to get in the Sunshine Coast rivers. Listen to the fishing reports on the radio - they'll probably have the best info.
