What is it like living and working in hamilton island?
-
Hi all I'm from Melbourne, 21 female, and thinking of moving up to Hamilton island for work. I'm really hoping to hear from someone that has already done it so i can hear about your experience of it. I pretty laid back and enjoy a drink and getting to know the people i work with. What is the best way to get a job on Hamilton island? I would probably be after either an office/admin.reception role (my current line of work in melb) or a bar tending/food assistant role. Which i have only a little experience in. I also want to get my scuba instructor certificates while im up there. Is there plenty of work around? I'm hoping to move there in mid november til .... whenever.. All advice you can give would be greatly appreciated!

Hi there, I live on Hamilton Island and moved here with my boyfriend 7 years ago and have been here ever since (i was 20 when i moved here). We went online at the Hamilton Island web site and applied for work and i believe it is still done the same way. what i can tell you is be prepared for some depressing living arrangements, nothing gross but most of the units are shared and are very small....moving here with a friend is highly recommended as sharing a small one roomed unit with a stranger is not for everyone. I am married to said boyfriend and now raising 2 kids on the island ( almost 3 yr old boy and 6 month girl) and find it to be a great community to live and raise a family and although it has been sometime since i have been apart of the party seen on the island i can say that the first few years before the kids where born was a blast, you become friends with all the people you live and work with and and everyone is pretty close nit up here. The dive shop which is on the island can help with dive certificates and can also take you diving out to the reef. heaps of fun stuff on the island but there is a small general store a post office, newsagents, chemist, NAB bank, clothing stores, pubs and clubs etc.

Hey, Im serious i live in the Whitsundays and I hate it here. It is really hot and humid, there are not much things to do other than tourism, reef orientated activities. I have not worked or resided on hamilton island itself but I only live 25mins away. There have been reports of poor working conditions etc. I would prefer to work on a nice medditerranean island or somewhere in the carribbean but thats just me. If you do choose to go I wish you the best of luck with your job. Im originally from Melbourne and im going back there in 2 years or so. Trust me once you leave Melbourne you will be dying to go back because there really is no place like marvellous Melbourne! I hate Qld.

Bloody hell! I am so sick of all you bloody southerners moving to QLD! LEAVE US ALONE!!! our families picked the good state to live in and yours didn't, you can have a cry about it but just learn to live with it! you all move up here then ***** and moan about the weather! yes melbourne has some hot days, but a lot of cold days too. but you dont have humidity. the tropics are hot ALL the time and are also very humid. my advice stay down in Melbourne! btw there is not many jobs in crappy areas so there sure as hell aint any in the good ones.
