Sorry about the long answer. I'm currently working in Ayr, some twenty hours north of Brisbane. Like all farming towns it has working hostels and caravan parks for backpackers. These places find you work, and you tend to stay on one farm for the duration. By all accounts, the caravan park I'm staying in is one of the better ones along the east coast. There are about 130 people here. Most have work, albeit we spend upwards of four weeks waiting for it. We get paid anything between $200 and $1000 a week. Most people definitely average $300 - $500. Rent costs $150 per week for a non-airconditioned double room, $160 for a single, or $100 for a tent space. We pay between $7 and $9 every day we work to cover trabsport, which is appallingly exorbitant considering the buses carry up to 20 people. Some people job share because the park owners are greedy and take on too many backpackers. Although the people that run the park are cool, we are not treated like paying customers, which really f*cks me off. I've heard of much worse places though. I know there's a dive of a place in Bundeburg which charges $200 a week for a filthy partitioned dorm room. I've picked melons, capsicums, chillies and currently eggplants (aubergines). It's all backbreaking. I've heard zucchinis (courgettes) are the worst. Melons are relatively easy. Most farmers are c*nts and expect 110% out of you for minimum wage. Only fruit pick for a second visa. Otherwise, get into hospitality. It pays much, much better.
