What age does preschool start in australia?

What age do kids in South Australia start year one?

  • My daughter turns 5 in late July this year....would she be eligible for year one? Also when does the year start?

  • Answer:

Most of these answers are incorrect. In most South Australian schools your child starts Reception at primary school the term after they turn 5. If they start in term 1 or 2 they will move into Year 1 the following calender year in February. If they start in term 3 or 4 they will do another year of reception the following year, and then move into Year 1 the year after that. So in your case she would probably start in term 4, although it depends when exactly in July her birthday is, if it's during the school holidays then she would start in term 3 (in two weeks time). She would start Reception (known in other states as Kindergarten, Prep etc). She would then do all of next year in Reception also, and move into Year 1 in 2011. You need to contact your school of choice and sort it out with them. If she's starting in two weeks that's not much notice to give the school. She needs to be booked in.

In South Australia five year olds are eligible for reception. The school year starts in February and ends in very early December. Every school accepts children differently. Some schools will accept her now in the second semester of the year whilst others would prefer she start at the beginning of next year, 2010. It really depends on the school. By the way, I assumed that by year one you meant the first grade at school. In the South Australian system year one follows reception. I would suggest talking to the schools you wish to enroll your daughter in. They will be able to help you as they deal with these situations all the time. Good luck, and I hope this helps!

6 in year one, sometimes 7. But reception comes first. She would need to start in the term she turns 5. So she could start in term 3, but she would either do 1.5 years (4 terms) of reception, or only half a year (2 terms), depending on her progress. I started reception in the March when I turned 5, therefore only did 3 terms, and not a full year and that was fine. Alternatively, as some people do, you could not start her at school until next year, when she is 5 and a half and she could do a full year then.

In Queensland you start school in the January of the year you turn 6. I don't know about the rest of Australia though. EDIT: You should try asking this in the parenting section, there is more people there and there will be a few Aussies.
