How to go to college in the UK?

I want to go to college in Ireland or the UK but i'm American how would I get accepted?

  • What are some really great colleges in Ireland?? Or just anywhere in the UK.

  • Answer:

There are a good few colleges in Ireland The National Universities in Ireland are: National University of Ireland, Galway (NUIG), University College Cork (UCC), National University of Ireland, Maynooth (NUI Maynooth) & University College Dublin (UCD). Other universities in Ireland include Queen's University, Belfast (Queen's), Dublin City University (DCU), University of Ulster (UU and of course, Trinity College which has an Ivy League-esqe reputation in Europe. Give them a google. For a semester of fun, i reckon NUIG, for a serious degree Trinity.

In Ireland, you go through the CAO (www.cao.ie), the Central Applications Office. All the info you need should be in there. And Ireland is not part of the UK, your question implies that you think it is. I would advise informing yourself properly before coming here.

If you want to know about British colleges then you should post a question in the UK section When you post your question say University, not college, a college in the UK is a further education institute that mostly deals with second level education and/or alternative qualifcations, they don't confer degrees. If you ask British users about colleges you won't get the answer you want. This link will take you to UCAS, which is the central agency for processing applications to University in the UK, it will have all the courses available & the links to the Universities but you will need to check with individual Universities what their application procedure for international students is http://www.ucas.ac.uk/

Yes, for Ireland go CAO, for the UK (including N.Ireland) go UCAS (www.ucas.ac.uk). They're different countries. Would you get accepted? I don't know that depends on how good your grades are etc.

Trinity and UCD are the 2 colleges in Ireland I'd consider. But their range of courses, like most colleges in Ireland, are limited in my opinion. The Irish colleges mentioned, (Galway, Maynooth, UCD, etc.) all have pretty much the same courses. I'd go to college in England if I were you (or Scotland or Wales). You have to pay the fee's, but the colleges are more likely to accept you because they actually want students. Not like Irish colleges with their "You'd be lucky to get in here" attitude. Accomodation is also very hard to get and expensive in Dublin. And I wouldn't really recommend anywhere else, apart from Cork or some other city to go, as an American. I'm sure you don't want to be going to some micky mouse college out in the sticks somewhere...lol Look at colleges in London. And if you want to do something like an hons degree in Animal Behaviour and Training or Animal Management and Behaviour (which I guarantee you won't get in Ireland) Bishop Burton College (In collaboration with Leeds and Hull uni) in East Yorkshire has some great animal and land courses. Ireland and Scotland have their fee's paid by the government, but I don't know if this would apply to you as a foreigner. And Ireland will rip you off in a lot of other ways, including the CAO application fee. As an Irish person studying in the UK, I recommend a British college. Good luck!
