Ireland and laptops, the best and cheapest and easiest to use and set up etc.?
-
Hello me again. I already posted questions about my health issues and returing to Ireland but now I want to know should I buy a cheap laptop over here in the usa and bring it with me to Ireland and what is the best one to get that I can use over there and get anything done with it if I need to over there. Also what kind of power cord should I get over there as an extention and can i as i am sure the power is different. There must be something as my boss here in the usa used to bring his laptop everywhere he travelled in europe etc and so I want to know the best, cheapest and easiest to set up over there in ireland from a home adn other uses. Also in Ireland how is the internet connection thing done over there from your house what are the options and the price etc....................I somehow do not feel like tracking over ireland to find a decent laptop so if I buy myself one here and start to use it now i can use it on the plane etc and keep in contact with my old freinds etc. also is there a charge for brining a laptop to ireland etc......any info. would be good.---thanks a million.

Answer:
DSL isn't the only broadband available, I'm using wireless (7 MB) from Digiweb and it works fine.

Buy it in the states - you will save a lot. Prices in US$ convert that to Euro and thats what you will pay. US$1000 will be a 1000 Euros and a euro is worth more than a dollar. Add to that VAT tax and well just buy it in america - you´d have more choice and it will def. be cheaper. Nowadays the laptop power cord adaptor can handle 110/220v auto-switching so you don´t need to do anything cept you will need a plug converter to change the american two prong into a UK style one - cost is a few dollars in a travel shop - buy it in the states as well. DSL is available in Eire from Eircom - the national telecom company. Same thing as in states - the DSL will go with the phone line. There are various packages available. Link below. No, Customs will not charge you any fees for bring in one laptop. If you have two of them and just one of you then they may suspect that you intend to sell the one or both in Ireland to make some money so just bring the one laptop and you have no worries.

Yes, the power is different. You might be as well to wait until you get to Ireland before buying one, in case anything goes wrong, it's just easier to get it sorted through the retailer you bought it at. Please bear in mind that the best and the cheapest are often mutually exclusive - you get what you pay for. Make a list of your requirements and use this as a basis for getting the best deal for what you need. Right now there are a lot of good deals around, as people aren't buying as much as they were this time last year, due to the economic situation. I have a HP, and it's working fine.
