Nursing in Ireland (from the US)?
-
hello! I am currently a nursing student here in California, looking to graduate and get my BSN and RN license in May of 2010 and would really love to work abroad in Ireland. I was wondering if anyone knew of the requirements of being a nurse coming from the US to Ireland. For instance, I know that in order to work in the UK you have to work here in the US for at least a year before you can even register through the nursing board in the UK...I've tried looking on the Irish nursing board website, but still have no clue! So any info could really help! Thanks!

At the moment, the HSE cannot even employ local Irish, they are seriously underfunded. I think you would be better off staying where you are for the time being. For future reference, here's how it works: employers look for potential employees from the local people available, if they can't find anyone there (which is not a problem at the moment, due to the shortage of jobs in Ireland) employers look for potential candidates among EU applicants (people from member EU states), and only if they cannot find anyone from either Ireland or the EU do they look elsewhere. Non-EU nationalities looking to live and work in any EU state first need to get a job offer on paper from a company that's registered in one of the member states, and then they can apply for the residency/work permit - but they have to do this from their country of origin. So don't up and move to Ireland first and look for a job later - it doesn't work that way. By the time you have built up sufficient employment experience, the economic situation might have improved and you might be lucky enough to land a job here. But I would strongly suggest getting extra qualifications, like for example cardiology, trauma, etc., if you can. It will give you more of an edge - there are many unemployed nurses in Ireland.

Generally any qualification gained for one EU state, is valid in all, the only additional requirement is that you speak the language. You could check under the department of health. (I'd recommend you get a job before coming here, as Ireland is a bit expensive and you'll burn through your savings.)

it's pretty much the same as the uk you have ta have a years experience to work as a general nurse or 3 years to work in a specialised capacity.
