What is Ireland like?

What's it like being Irish and living in Ireland?

  • I live in SE Asia but I have always been fascinated with Ireland and the Irish culture, language, people...Once, an elderly stranger on the internet helped me buy a magazine, scanned it and emailed it to me without expecting anything in return. Then he said there are still Irish folks that are brought up with the 'helping your neighbour' value. I found that very interesting. My fave actress is Irish and she is always described as lovely and she is... The countryside in Ireland is also very very breathtaking. Eventhough I only know from pictures, it's like stepping into another world itself. I know some Irish people can be rather brash and aggressive but there's people like that everywhere. I came across a blog post about this Asian couple travelling to Ireland and they say most of the Irish are really pleasant folks including the children. So, what is it 'really' like being Irish and living in Ireland? Do you think the Irish are really as pleasant as people say they are?

    Im in 18 and live in the capital which is huge for the size of the country and I love it. Some people that say they have lived in LA and london think Dublin is far better. Like the people are really friendly and helpful but like everywhere there is the few that aren't. I love the country like it is the best American,European and British cultures with our own twist. Like we have our own values and pride our selves on our country. The buildings are amazing its what london would still be if it wasn't for World War 2. The country side is pretty much is unchanged in part like until about 30 years ago there was no phones really and no days some places don't have cell phone service. There is thousands of little family run farms and a lot of people were raised on them and moved to the bigger cities or moved to places like the UK and USA. We shaped America like Halloween and St Patrick's Day are irish Traditions. Like I really hope you get to visit sometime as you wont forget like....But for now watch PS I love you which was wrote by an Irish writer and made in Ireland..

The Irish are very open towards strangers, its very easy to strike up a conversation. Then when they have found out everything there is to know about you, they can talk about you behind your back.

I live in Ireland, a rural part of it, the bog! Now the people brought up the old fashioned Irish way down where I live and a lot of other rural places are very welcoming, and neighbourly, all the local shops and pubs are referred to as the person who owns them cause everyone knows everyone else, they re-name roads, of they just never knew the "official" name and call it what it's been called for generations. (This is very confusing when giving people directions as I tend to rattle off the unofficial names and no one knows what I am on about...) However all the people (most of them) who live in towns and cities and suburbs are the same as they are everywhere else, I am not saying it's a bad thing that' just the way it is. I love the Irish language and speak it fluently but realise that that is a personal choice, English is the countries first language now. As for what Ireland looks like? Well as with everywhere it depends where you go! I can't really say what it's like living in Ireland as a country, I've only lived in one place and can't speak for everyone but I like where I live.

Dublin is the Pale of Ireland. It is the civillised part of the country but beyond the Walls of Dublin you enter a strange land. A land of Sorcery and mystery It is called the land of the culchies where you will find strange people called publicans. For a while now we have allowed these people to enter the City and they brought with them evil Leprachauns with their invisible gold. We are only begining to clean up the mess they have made.
