Considering moving to Ireland, lots of questions! ?
-
My fiancé and I are considering leaving the United States for the sake of our personal sanity- I mean really, have you see any news from here lately? Its not going well. Anyway, our hearts are quite set on Ireland. I've been doing research and I am basically just here to get information from people. I want to know what those actually living in Ireland think. Similar to if you were considering moving to the US... Our Websites and things tend to...glorify. I have a list of things that are important, and in the interest of gaining the most opinions possible, I am going to replicate that list here to give an idea of what I don't know. Ha! Education, from childhood to university, what's it like in Ireland? How is health care handled? Are the people of Ireland satisfied with the Government there? What type of government do you feel like you have? How are the homeless treated by the cities? What is the Irish stance on private gun ownership? What is the emphasis on reducing global carbon emissions and other "green" efforts? What's the weather like? Where in Ireland would you suggest to live in? What are the police like? Are they forceful and heavily prevalent? What's the crime like in the cities? Rural areas? How is the economy doing from an average citizens point of view? Does Ireland want to dominate the rest of the world with its military presence? if I want to see greenery and nature when I look out my bedroom window, where's the prettiest scenery? Ok, I think that's more than enough to draw from. I look forward to your responses!

Welcome to Y!A I see you just registered today and have the feeling you are not as genuinely innocent as you seem in matters regarding Ireland? You may not have realised but there is a "Discover" section at the top right of your screen which gives answers to previous questions of a similar nature. Questions such as yours get asked every day on Yahoo if you look. To move to Ireland you and your fiance will need a job and preference for jobs is always given to Irish and EU nationals first. Basically right now there are no jobs in Ireland and over 430,000 people out of work (including my partner who was made redundant 14 months ago) out of a population of just over 4 million people so quite a high percentage. We are in the depths of recession and thousands of our young college graduates are emigrating to Australia and Canada to find work because they cannot get a job here. Do you not read the newspapers? Reporters from Wall Street Journal were camped out here reporting about the IMP bailout its hardly a secret. I suggest you look to Canada maybe seeing as its right next door.

Listen, you're not the first American to think they can just up and move to Ireland, and you certainly won't be the last. I'm afraid you're going to be very disappointed - there's a process which involves looking for a job in Ireland from your country of origin, and even if you do get a job offer in writing, which in the current economic climate I seriously doubt, there's still the thorny matter of getting a residency/work permit. After all, we are an EU country, which means that any jobs in Ireland are first offered to locals, that is, Irish people; if there are no locals available to do the work - which is most definitely NOT the case at the moment - then EU nationals are considered. Only if there are no suitably qualified local or EU nationals available to do the job, does the employer get to consider non-EU nationals. Basically you haven't a hope. However, if you are independently wealthy to the extent that you don't have to work but can still contribute to the local economy, and can prove this, I doubt you'd have a problem. But how many people are like that? All the question you ask could be answered by doing some research of your own, particularly those relating to how we feel about your government, our economy, health care, education, gun ownership, weather .... And now a cold hard fact: Ireland of reality is NOTHING LIKE the patronising and frankly highly insulting Top o' The Morning rubbish produced by Hollywood. Nor are we a nation of heavy drinkers. I'm sorry if my response is not what you would like, but can you not understand that this question you have asked is asked every single bloody day in this forum? I would suggest that your first action would be to do a search of answers in Yahoo Answers pertaining to being an American wishing to move to Ireland. You will get pretty the same as you are getting from me.

1: Top quality 2: Better then the US but needs to be completely restructured. Too top heavy and bureaucratic wasting money that could be spent on increasing medical resources. 3: No. 4: A democratically elected centrist right. 5: Faceless. 6: Only for hunting, strict licencing. No concealed weapons, no automatics. Gun control is a blessing. 7: Taken a back seat since the recession. Governed by NIMBYist propaganda. 8: Cold and wet. 9: Depends what you like. 10: Non existent. Took them an hour and a half to respond to an armed robbery. 11: Comparatively low but you still need to be careful. 12: In the toilet. 13: Hardly. 14: Kerry, or anywhere in the West. Being realistic you won't find a job here at the moment though so I wouldn't get caught up in this.

Forget about it. Ireland is now under the heel of the EUSSR/Fourth Reich which is a wing of the Zionist international banker World tyrannical conspiracy headed by the House of Rothschild AKA the New World Order. Only a small% age of its people have woken up to what's going on - this despite their being enslaved to banker debt that they can NEVER pay. .One of the few who has runs a website out of Switzerland The World's real power elites are heading to the Southern Hemisphere since they know the Northern Hemisphere is heading for meltdown that they themselves have induced.

Hi there - I gave a comprehensive answer to a similar question at http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20110209212007AAENvvR In response to some of your questions... Education, from childhood to university, what's it like in Ireland? Education is relatively good but somewhat under-funded in the republic. Outcomes are generally high - but slipping somewhat. If you move here and then have kinds and want free education for them, best to live in Northern Ireland. If you want free education for college, best to live in Republic. How is health care handled? Health care is a divided between public (long waiting lists, but good care) and private (short waiting lists, good care). Most peopl who can afford it take out health insurance. It is a lot cheaper here than in the US, but is becoming more expensive. Expect lots of changes in health care over the coming years. Are the people of Ireland satisfied with the Government there? Nope. There is a general election in February and a new gov will come in. What type of government do you feel like you have? Incompetent and selfish. Same as everywhere! How are the homeless treated by the cities? There are lots of visible homeless in the cities as a result of a legal change a few years ago, when begging was ruled constitutional. However, that will change back this year with a new law. Generally, homeless are treated well tjo'. What is the Irish stance on private gun ownership? No-one can own a gun except for a farming shotgun or a sporting rifle. Handguns are totally unheard of and generally illegal. Guns are frowned upon and the US attitude to guns is viewed with utter disbelief. What is the emphasis on reducing global carbon emissions and other "green" efforts? Positive, but failing. Some good stats on this are at:http://www.epa.ie/environmentinfocus/indicatordashboard/ (I designed this site :) What's the weather like? Mild, rainy. Summer highs of 24C. Where in Ireland would you suggest to live in? See my other post. What are the police like? Are they forceful and heavily prevalent? Generally docile. Unarmed for the most part and socially accepted. What's the crime like in the cities? Rural areas? Average. Rural areas are OK too. Best to ask locals about any problems. Usually to do with transients and opportunism. How is the economy doing from an average citizens point of view? Shite. Have u not seen the news?!? The IMF is in ireland. Does Ireland want to dominate the rest of the world with its military presence? Yes, definitely. In fact, our new nuclear deterent is about to launch and our orbiting laser satellite is already working. if I want to see greenery and nature when I look out my bedroom window, where's the prettiest scenery? See my other post. Good luck!

Are you nuts? Moving to Ireland in these times? Fair play to you though. Ireland is beautiful and I love it to death. BUT. Economic situation here is scary! So think twice!

Actually guys, has anyone got any proof of this statement that employers can ONLY employ Irish first, and only if they can't get an Irish candidate can they look to the rest of the EU. Because from my knowledge this is not the case. Just wondering if anyone can officially prove these claims? I know that they can only look further afield if they can't get a suitabel EU candidate, but the first part doesn't ring true.

I moved there from Britain. The economy has changed drastically since I was there so you need to be prepared to downsize and simplify. I found the health service to be of a very high standard. The weather is wet especially the further west you go but the best scenery is also there so take your pick. We lived in a fairly small town and in 4 years my husband was stopped once for a spot check breathaliser test and that was our only police contact. I don't know where you live but you'll probably notice the rain, the lower standard of living, the peace and quiet (if you live in the rurals), and the rain.
