Are we too obsessed with politics/current affairs BS in Ireland?
-
It seems to me like every other programme on RTE these days (not to mention the print media and radio) focus or have some mention of the present political happenings, the economic crisis or current affairs (which almost ALWAYS involves politics or economics). Maybe I'm just being naive, but am I the only one to think this? And is it or is it not a bit, I don't know...over the top? You know, like hitting us with the same mundane bulls*it over and over again? To my mind they should focus more on making entertaining shows or informative documentaries dealing with other aspects of global or Irish life. Any thought?

Answer:
Yes, RTE is a bit insular alright. And it's a pity, because it would be good for many people to see more of the world.

Its always like that in times of crisis no matter where in the world you are...we in the UK got hammered with it when our economy started to slide as well. It's important people know the facts but sometimes it feels like the media exists to get people down. When I start to notice this I just tend to turn it off.

We're not, it's the media that are obsessed about it.

There IS a general election coming up! Of course there will be a lot of reporting of it in the media. The people have to elect representatives to run the country - all these debates and reports are kind of like a long job interview for the various parties and candidates. We wouldn't need all that if we all took a proper interest in politics all the time and not just around election time. Most of the programs you're talking about are election specials, we'll be back to the usual vacuous lite programming after Feb 25th. As for Eamon Dunphy, he has been a broadcaster for many years now on current affairs (on Newstalk's Breakfast and The Last Word), not just a sports pundit. He has been involved in the New Vision political party and was going to run as a candidate in this election but decided along with the other candidates not to due to time and money constraints. He's probably as qualified as any ex-journo (eg Shane Ross) or ex-sports person (eg Henry Kenny (Enda's da), Jack Lynch, Jimmy Deenihan etc) to pass comment on current affairs.
