What is Ireland like?

What would you like to ask? I want to rent a car in the Rep of Ireland and drive it in Scotland?

  • I'm planning a trip to Ireland (visiting both the Republic and N. Ireland) in June 2011. I'm flying into Dublin where I would rent a car. I would like to take the ferry out of Larne to Scotland where I would spend a week. Take the ferry back and continue my visit to N.Ireland and the Republic. Can I rent a car in Ireland and take it to Scotland? Or, will I need to rent 2 cars? One for Ireland, one for Scotland. Side note: I've been to Ireland a few times so I'm familiar with the roads, manual transmission, driving on the opposite side etc....

  • Answer:

All I know is its usually cheaper to rent a car in the UK (Northern Ireland) than in Ireland. I run a B&B in Cork and one of my regular American guests hires a car in Belfast for the duration of his stay down here (usually 10 days) as its much cheaper than hiring one here in Ireland. You might want to look into 2 cars but going over as a foot passenger and hiring a car in Scotland rather than paying for the car on the ferry? Just a thought.

You can take car to Scotland but you have to tell car hire firm when you are getting the car, and you will get extra insurance.

Why not rent a car in N. Ireland then you can drive it in scotland wales and England as N.Ireland is part of the Uk. Renting it in ROI means immediately you are cross into another country. a few miles noth of Dublin.
