I have decided that I really DO wanna move permanently to Ireland from Portugal.?
-
Hi there! This is my finally decision. I have made up my mind, and I do, indeed, want to move to Ireland. I wanna assist River-dance shows, interact with Irish people, breath the northern climate, attend Irish pubs and drive on the left side of the road. I'm sick of Portugal's sunny days, and it's conformism for Soccer and never ending Corporate Nepotists. I can't accept the fact, of living and developing my life, where I was born. Yet, a few doubts are stuck on my mind, when it comes to Immigration within countries outside the "Schengen Area". I'm from Portugal, a country inside EU, along side Ireland. However, Ireland, does not belong to the "Schengen Treaty", just like United Kingdom. Which means I don't have free roam between this countries (Portugal - Ireland), right? As Portuguese I can I have the ability to move to France, Italy, Germany without any kind of paperwork, but my Portuguese ID and Drivings License. What documents do I require to move to Ireland? How many years do I need to reside in Irish soil, in order, to apply for Irish citizenship. (I wanna renounce my Portuguese citizenship) Is it a long process. Or can I simply move to Ireland, and acquire the civilian rights, right the way? Do I need a Passport?(I've heard of British fellows in need of some king of Passport to move to the european continent) I really need to know what documents do I need before immigrating, please inform what documents are mandatory. I don't want to be committing felony, due to lack of migration knowledge. Side Question: Once I achieve Irish citizenship, am I change my name? Any input regarding the subject of this thread, would be much appreciated.

Answer:
You need to find a job and right now that's like finding leprechaun shite. You can't claim welfare until you've been resident here a long time. You'd need a passport as we are not part of the Schengen area. You need to be resident 5 years before you can apply for citizenship, but the waiting list after applying is a couple of years. This is before you can apply, you aren't guaranteed to get it, and you wouldn't have to renounce Portuguese citizenship to get it. No disrespect, but I think you have the "Hollywood" notion of Ireland. You should come here for a month and see if you like it first.

As an EU national, you have a right to travel to, live in and work in Ireland. All you need is proof that you are an EU national. A Portuguese passport will do. When you've lived in Ireland for (I think) four years out of a continuous five-year period you can apply for Irish citizenship. You will not be required to change your name.

Good for you and make sure you stay on the left side of the road, hospital services in this Country are stretched enough as it is

Lucky for you, like its been said you can live in Ireland. BUT finding work there right now is so very hard. I don';t recommend moving there unless you have deep pockets and can support yourself. The Irish people are having a hard enough time finding and keeping work without people moving there and making it harder for those that have lived there all their life.

hi john! from what i've heard from my aussie and european mates who have been there on exchange, ireland is a reeeeeaaaalllly nice place. like, they have a lot of scenic views (fields, mountains, interesting buildings etc) great food, lovely animals, and yeah.. stuff like that. but from the articles i've read, there is recession at the moment and that the locals feel that the immigrants only add up to the country's burden cuz they migrate there to share the "irish benefits". sounds logical when i think about it.. it's a disaster actually cuz yah know, it makes sense that they dont want foreigners taking over local jobs and stuff --especially during difficult times. also, i know that riots exist in every country but ireland is making headlines worldwide to be honest. personally, i don't think they're racist -they just have concerns about immigration. i'm actually thinking of going there on exchange myself. i just hope they dont mistake me as an "immigrant wanna be" though cuz i dont want anybody throwing bombs at me whilst studying and touring. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PRh-rZNlpRo&feature=related - "the wall" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XiQtPVY4Txw - latest riot (just this july!)

You don't understand, any country within the EU can move freely between each country. Sick of sunny days? I went to albufeira last week and the heat was brilliant! I did miss the green grass though :(. You don't need Irish citizenship to live here. Your portugeese, you can live here without any problems. Like when we landed in Portugal we were only checked by our passports it's not like America where they check to see how long you're staying and all you can stay as long as you want. If you marry an Irish citizen you can get citizenship I think but does it matter? I think you can apply after you live their for a while I think
