Where to go on a University Exchange in Europe?

Can a foreign student going on exchange to europe go to dublin/belfast?

  • 'yo how's it going? so, im an international student in australia and imma go on exchange to nottingham/germany next semester. thing is, i dont know if i can go there cuz my nationality is not on the list of countries who can enter Ireland and travel without visa (http://www.dfa.ie/home/index.aspx?id=8777). Apparently I would be granted another student visa, and i reckon i can go anywhere in europe cuz... yeah, we'd be visiting buildings and all that as part of the architecture curriculum. but yeah, i really dont know that's why im asking aye? our faculty used to send students on exchange to ireland, but they stopped just this semester cuz they said ireland has been having some economic crisis and will take time to recover. honestly, i dont care wherever in europe im gonna end up studying for as long as i can go to ireland. having said that, i know some of u guys might think that im one of those people living in fantasy, thinking that ireland is some paradise or whatever. well, im pretty sure im in touch with reality so please dont bother giving a sh!t about that. trust me, it's all good. seriously, i feel like ireland's calling me. i know it's insane and im probably screwed aye but yeah, i gotta be there to find out.

  • Answer:

It would have been more helpful if you had given your nationality but as a rule if you are not a citizen of an EU member state then you will need a visa to study in the Republic of Ireland or the UK unless you can acquire citizenship of an EU member state through a parent (in a very limited number of countries a grandparent) Belfast in Northern Ireland is part of the UK but again, if you are not a citizen of an EU member state you will require a visa to study in the UK Whether or not you can anywhere you please in Europe will depend on your nationality - citizen of an EU member state can go where they wish but there are some restrictions on non-EU citizen, some can enter EU member states as a tourist for up to 90 days without the need for a visa, others must have a visa. Your study visa will NOT cover you to go where you wish. Neither the Republic of Ireland or the UK are signatories of the Schengen Agreement, an Irish visa will not cover you to visit other countries.

Firstly you have to realise that Ireland is an island. Not a country. Ireland the island has two countries on it, the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Maybe the island is calling you, maybe not.If you have a Visa for Europe then you will be pretty much covered for both parts of the island.
