If you're only in Ireland for a week what sights should be on the itinerary?
-
I am helping my mother-in-law organise her trip to Ireland. She and some of her relatives will be visiting for a week. I just need some ideas for essential things to do and see in the Republic, both on and off the beaten path. From what I gather they'll be in Dublin two days, then take the train to Galway. They will be on a chauffeured day tour of Clare (Cliffs of Moher, Burren) and then onto Cork, Blarney Castle, Cobh, etc. I don't think they have time to travel north or to N.I. this time around. Thanks!

Answer:
Extend time in Dublin. I would recommend that if you want to see the north go on a day trip on the train from Dublin going in the morning and back in the evening. Get the bus tour, which will show you the whole city and everything you need to see and then you can spend the rest of the day in the city centre. In Dublin there is loads. Just to name a few: Its Georgian buildings for example are in the process of being made a UNESCO site. The GPO centre of the 1916 rising. Customs House. Leinster House the Irish parliament. College Green and Trinty College. The National History Museum. Dublin Castle. GO TO NEWGRANGE in Meath. It is by far the most impressive site. Its in Meath just north of Dublin. You will need to give it most of a day.

You're right, they won't have time to do the North as well. Just doing what you have said is already going to be a tight squeeze and really exhausting.

If they are getting the train I am guessing they don't have plans to hire a car? This means going "off the beaten track" is impossible as public transport is virtually nonexistent outside the main towns/cities. Doing what they are doing they will be busy enough, you can't "do" Cobh, Blarney Castle & Cork all in one day so there is 2 days at least in and around Cork plus the 2 days in Dublin and the Cliffs of Moher is a whole day trip and they are going to Galway as well? Factor in travelling from Dublin to Galway then Galway to Cork (prob 2-3 hours journey each time) and they won't have much time to do anything else realistically. The last day will be spent getting back from Cork to Dublin, again at least 2 hours travelling.
