How to move on from your job?

Should I Move to Another Country (Ireland) without a Job? How should I convince my parents?

  • I am currently in the process of moving to Dublin, Ireland for personal reasons, and so far I have been applying for jobs online and researching for apartments to rent. I have applied for nearly 100 jobs since last month and so far I have been receiving rejection letters. I know that there's nothing wrong with my CV and my cover letter as I have had it checked by a qualified HR worker. I know that the Irish economy is VERY bad (i.e. worse than what it is in the uk) and I feel that a lot of recruiters are avoiding applicants who don't live in the area or in another country. So, I'm wondering whether to move to Ireland now without a job? (I know I can get temp work but not too sure how much temp work there is).... and, if I was to move now then how should I convince my parents? I have told my mum and dad and other family members about my plans and they think I should get a job before I move to Dublin but now I'm not too sure.... Any help/assistance appreciated! By the way, I'm 24 in a few days, I'm very qualified in Accounts Assistant/Administration roles and moving to Ireland has been my dream for over 10 years :)

Well I don't think I will be able to top the answer by American Mom, but I will try my best. You should definitely wait until you have a job offer before moving here. Things are bad, but there ARE jobs out there, I started a new job in February and my partner just got a job offer today, so the jobs are there. My advise would be, along with applying for positions the way you are now (through agencies and job boards) also try sending your CV to companies directly, along with a cover letter, and follow it up with a phonecall a week later. It would be a good idea to lean on your Accounts assistant skillset, as most companies have an accounts/bookkeeping department in house. I wouldn't count too heavily on your Admin experience, because unfortunately if a company is having cutbacks, their administrators would be the first to go. Good luck!

nobody can get a job at the moment,im Irish and iv been looking for a job for the past 5 months with no luck, and if there are jobs they are going to be givin to other Irish, its not anything personal its just that in hard times we need to look out for our self's. coming to Ireland with out a job is not a good idea, Ireland is one of the most expensive country's in Europe if not the most expensive. it would be impossible for you to support yourself without some kind of income. especially Dublin the most expensive part of Ireland. It will be a complete disaster. wait till you get a job

gaspipe

I agree with Gaspipe's comments and would like to add that temp work is very hard to come by at the moment. My daughter is qualified in the business area and was signed up with 3 agencies but got very few calls and I know of a number of others who find it very hard to get temp work.

At the moment jobs are scarce. I would agree with your parents, I came here a decade ago, when Irish firms were looking in the UK for workers, but things have changed now. I would strongly advise against moving here (or anywhere else for that matter) without having a job set up.

American Mom

To be honest unless you have a job, you are going to find it very hard to live here, unless it's absolutely necessary to move here then you are better off waiting. You'd be making a mistake moving without any way to support yourself.

Like a Fox

I'm sorry but you will probably receive rejection letters here too. Its proven that Irish firms are twice as likely to give a job to an Irish applicant than one who is not Irish. How would you support yourself without a job? Find a flat, pay rent etc? If I were you I would stay in the UK until this recession is over, it won't last forever, things will start to pick up in the next 12-18 months. I remember the last recession very well I was trying to sell a house!
