Should I study abroad in England, Ireland, or Scotland?

Study Abroad in England or Ireland?

  • I'm going to study abroad next semester and I've narrowed my choices down to Galway, Ireland, Lancaster, England, and London, England. My boyfriend, who lived in London for 3 years, is trying to convince me to stay out of England. He said that people are rude and obnoxious, and it was basically a miserable place to live. Obviously, I realize he is probably exaggerating and stereotyping because he hated living there. I'm a very outgoing person, and I'm trying to keep my boyfriend's opinion out of it. I'm not too picky about the location, I just don't want to be in a very rural area. Also, I would like to be able to travel parts of western Europe. If you have any insight to the three places I mentioned, please comment. Thank you!

  • Answer:

I live in Galway & the University is great here & a great place to study.... you can fly direct from Galway to uk......http://www.galwayairport.com/.. I also lived in London & I loved it as so much to do there ....Never been to Lancaster so cannot comment on that... http://www.nuigalway.ie/student-life/campus-activities/ Galway would be safer than London & it is also beside the sea & there are also lots of festivals on throughout the year so a good vibe here & lots of students from all over the world & easy to make friends here.........

London would be the best for travelling to Europe but bear in mind London is a rude , hard , and quite often dangerous place to live . Typically student accommodation will be in very bad areas where the only English people you will ever see are the students . However if you're sensible and street wise it also has the biggest and best clubs , shops , cinemas , music venues , theatres etc etc etc and you're not stuck in London . Britain is relatively small compared with America ( I'm guessing you're American ) you can get virtually anywhere in the country in a matter of hours and a flight to Ireland is about an hour . Be warned though it is expensive .

I think you need a new boyfriend. People are as you treat them generally. Why not focus on which course seems most interesting one to you. If all the same then moving to London might not work as your boyfriend will punish you. All will be equally good. Its simply your attitude that makes it good or bad.( If still undecided take the riskier bravest one )

Go to Limerick city. Seriously.

Galway is probably the closest to rural of the three - but I haven't been to Lancaster. London is a huge city, so if you like that, maybe that is for you. If you're outgoing and like going out and meeting people, Galway is the place for you. It's a great student city.

Well, having studied at uni in both countries I'd suggest Ireland, absolutely. I went to uni close enough to London, didn't really like it. I've also gone to uni in Ireland but not Galway. Ireland is much more relaxed and friendlier. Let me put it this way, I've met foreign students who've stuided in England and some didn't like it but I've yet to meet foreign students who've studied in Ireland who haven't like it. If it's Galway I guess it's NUIG http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_University_of_Ireland,_Galway or is it GMIT http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GMIT Galway City is great! NUIG has a great rep and has a lovely campus. GMIT is fine too. You could also consider UCC in Cork http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_College_Cork As for travelling to mainland Europe there's an airport close enough to Galway called Knock Airport/Ireland West Airport http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knock_airport Another airport called Shannon is also close enough http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shannon_airport You could get cheap Ryanair flights from either airport (sometimes for only a few euro!) http://www.ryanair.com There's also an airport in Cork http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cork_Airport Enjoy!

Step by step Galway. I've been there twice but only as a visitor. Don't consider my opinion as the best but to be honest I liked the atmosphere. It is a nice town but small a bit. Lancaster, Sorry I've never been there "My boyfriend, who lived in London for 3 years, is trying to convince me to stay out of England. He said that people are rude and obnoxious, and it was basically a miserable place to live" ============================= This is a blanket statement. I live in London and it is not a bad place. Some people may find it cold, impersonal, difficult to get around given its huge size... but I believe as long as you get some contacts everything will be fine. When I moved to London I was moaning about everything and everyone. But after a few months everything was just fine and normal. You also did not specify where do you come from? It does really matter. F.e if you are from the US you will experience maybe a huge culture shock. If you are French, it might be easier for you to get along with the different environment. I should inform you that people here in Europe live differently, think differently and give priorities to other things in contrast with an American, Australian etc etc... To be honest with you, it might be better to set a different priority. Which university is the best. The environment comes second. Another good choice might be Dublin as well.

anyone i know who is in college in galway loves it. its the most chilled out and 'arty' of all the cities in ireland. and its a city but small, near the country but there plenty of pubs and clubs and shops and all that. i dont know where else u should go, dont know lancaster but i do know london never found it that bad.its close enough to shannon airport as well.

London is not England, the behaviour of Londoners is not typical of the rest of the country. Londoners are obnoxious an rude. London is extremely expensive, the air quality is the worst in Europe, the traffic is appalling and I wouldn't recommend it at all. Lancaster is very out of the way. It is in a rural area in one of the Wettest parts of the country. it isn't a place for excitement and I would be concerned about the standard of education. Travel to and from Lancaster is going to be more difficult. Galway is a traditional Arts centre in Ireland. It has be slow to develop modern amenities. Ireland can be expensive for basic goods, but labour costs are low which means things like eating out are affordable. Some Irish people will want to ignore you,but most will be welcoming. The Irish love to talk, even though what they say doesn't always make any sense. For that reason they are easy to get to know. Galway has a small airport, so you can access Europe direct. Beware Irish transport timetables though. Irish planes, trains and buses travel never travel on time. Always allow a few extra hours to reach your destination. I think Galway would be a better choice than Lancaster for you. Better still might be to look for somewhere else in England or the larger Irish cities of Cork and Dublin. ================================= NE England = Friendliest people. Traditional values and culture. Cold in winter, sunny in summer and autumn. NW England = Warm people, more crime. Wet weather year round, but milder then NE in winter. greater immigrant population than NE. Midlands = The most laid back people. High levels of cultural diversity in the cities. Average weather, good transport links. SW England = Friendly people. Traditional culture. Warmest weather, with some strong winter storms. Some heavy transport congestion, but good links outside of peak travel times. More expensive than the north. East of England = Rural areas. Traditional culture. Dry weather. Can be looked down upon by the rest of the English. SE England and South= Expensive. Culture also influenced by Europe and London. Can be a lot of snobbery and obsession with wealth. London = Massive migrant population both from the U.K. and the rest of the world. People make their money in London then usually settle elsewhere. In my opinion everything about London is substandard except the high arts and museums. People born in London rarely leave the city for anything.
