Why do I need to give my UK National Insurance number when applying for a PPS number in Ireland?

I'm providing all the usual stuff, passport, proof of Irish address, proof of offer of permanent work in Dublin, I was just perplexed as to why they would need the UK National Insurance number.

So they can link your contributions together so that when the time comes there isn't a shortfall in your pension or worst case scenario if you need to sign on or return to the UK to sign on - if you ask them, they can explain why to you in more detail then I can about why they need your NIN but it's also part of ensuring you are who you say you are
