Have You Ever Seen Or Met Any Famous Irish People?

  • Last Saturday, while I was walking through town I happened to spot the comedian Patrick McDonnell who is famous for appearing in Naked Camera and for playing the part Eoin McLove in an episode of Father Ted. Also, I happened to bump into Tommy Tiernan about six or seven years ago while he was making the program Supertramp and ended up talking to him for a few minutes. So have you ever met any famous Irish people and if not then who would you like to meet?

  • Answer:

I was at a Neil Young gig in Vicar St a few years ago and Bono, the Edge, Gavin Friday and their partners were all right next to me. They're all tiny!! Gerry Ryan was there too but he's such a t***er. When I lived in London I used to drink in the same pub (Filthy McNasty's) as Shane McGowan sometimes. I've sat at the next table to Tommy Tiernan at Arabica in Galway.

I met Daniel O'Donnell when he visited a patient whose family let him know she couldn't come to his show (she had a ticket) because she was in hospital. Not only her, but he said hello to everyone in the adjoining wards too There is many a star who wouldn't have bothered. A lovely man. I wasn't a fan before, but I think very highly of him ever since.

Nope, only regular/not-famous Irish people. I guess I would like to meet them if they're nice and don't act like US celebrities.

Not sure if you would particularly call her a celebrity, but Maria Doyle Kennedy (She played Patsy in the Eoin McLove/ Night of the nearly Dead episode in Father Ted) among a few other things. She was singing at a wedding I was at recently. I didn't know who she was at the time, it was only when I looked one of her songs up on the internet afterwards that I realised.

I should be doing something else

I bumped into Daniel O'Donnell when he was staying in the same hotel as me. We talked for abit, he's a nice fella even though I'm not a fan. I've also seen Hugo Duncan, he came to my town for a live show in the street.

i saw Anne Doyle off the news buying groceries a few times in Dunnes where i used to live. I wont say where tho in respect of Anne's privacy :)

If I met Eoin McLove walking down the street I think I'd have to scream! I've met nobody of any real consequence.

Well I've met some famous Irish sports personaities and chatted away to them: Paul O'Connell, Brian O'Driscoll, Peter Stringer, Sonia O'Sullivan to name a few. I also bump into Pat Shortt and John Kenny (he is a really nice giy!) quite a lot. John is very chatty and so down to earth. Pat can be a bit short (no pun intended!) I also shook Dustins "hand" up in Dublin several years ago. I have seen a few others alright but not worth mentioning because I only saw them from a distance. I don't know who I'd like to meet because I never really thought of it but I suppose I'd really like to meet Colm Meaney and I would love to meet Frank Kelly!

Met Miley from Glenroe in a pub in Cork years ago. Met Bertie in a Limerick shopping centre and he thumped me in the back when I said I didn't like FF, seriously, lol. Met a guy, now deceased, called Mark McCormack in Amsterdam when I worked there in a hotel yonks ago - he wrote "What They Don't Teach You at Harvard Business School" He was also on Forbes 400 Richest Americans list (I snuck him in there as he was in fact Irish-American so maybe he doesn't count exactly, lol) Em, that's it I think. Oh yeah, Sharon Ni Bhoilain (if that's the correct spelling) on O'Connell Bridge and the British actor Richard Griffiths in a supermarket in Cork years ago.
