Paris, France - Eiffel Tower, The Leuvre, Les Champs Elysées. France - Mont St. Michel (north, beautiful!) London, England - London Eye, Tower Bridge, London Aquarium, Madame Tussauds, London Dungeons, River Boat Ride on the Thames, West End shows (the Lion King is amazing!) Britain (in general) - Land's End, Stone Henge, Angel of the North, Giants Causeway.. Dublin, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Belfast, Manchester, Birmingham, Cardiff (just some pretty key cities in the UK and Republic of Ireland) Germany - the Autobarn (a road with no speed limit). Poland - Auchwitz is worth a culteral and historical visit. It's good to learn more about the Holocaust and pay a little respect to those who died for us. Brussels, Belgium - Atomium, The Grand Square, the Manecen Pis (one of the most famous statues in the world, by the way it's a lot smaller than you think) Athens, Greece - There's a hell of a lot of Ancient Greek Mythology which is famous from this place, take time to check it out, it's pretty interesting stuff. Rome, Italy - The Colosseum, The Leaning Tower of Pisa. Naples, Italy - Mt. Vesuvius, Pompeii - the Amalfi Coast (one of the most beautiful coasts in the world) Southern France - The Ardeche Gorge (La Gorge de l'Ardeche) is extremely beautiful, take time to canoe/kayak down the river, enjoy the rapids and bivouak/camp overnight, the experience is one of a lifetime (take a river guide/team with you, the rapids can be dangerous), it's definitely a good experince to enjoy with a friend. Or if you're not up for canoeing/kayaking or bivouaking/camping then you can still enjoy the sites of the gorge (including Pont d'Arc (a beautiful natural arch over the river)) by visiting one of the river's many stone/sand beaches. A worthwhile experience, I can assure you! (ps. take insect repellant) Narbonne and the area around it are worth visiting as well, or even Toulouse, the southern French culture is a wonderful thing to be a part of, make sure you take time to learn the basics of the local lingo (pleases and thank you's will earn a little bit of respect in shops and bars). Carcasonne is another little city worth a visit, it's a medievel city with turrets and a drawbridge, there's not much there but it's quaint and free =) Also, I'm gonna blow my own trumpet here and tell you that you HAVE TO come to the Channel Islands. They're a group of islands of the North coast of France. Jersey (yes, it came before New Jersey and yes, that's where New Jersey got it's name form) is the biggest island and Guernsey the second largest (but Guernsey has a bigger bailiwick, including all of the other Channel Islands) so Guernsey is better (not that I'm biased). Guernsey is rumoured to produce the BEST milk in the world from its cattle (seriously it's sooo nice) The islands (particularly Guernsey) are beautiful, quaint, original, culteral (including our own language 'Guernsey French' which is sadly dying out, and our own unique breed of cattle (they're like pedigree cows lol). They're a must visit group of islands.. make sure not to generalise the Channel islands on just Guernsey or just Jersey, because they're all different in different ways =) have fun. Hope this helps, sorry I got a bit carried away with my experiences of Europe.

Of course you should try to see the great cities like : Paris, London, Madrid, Rome, Amsterdam, Berlin, Venice, Milan, Copenhagan, Athens and Istanbul (phew!). but you'd do well to visit some of the lesser known, slightly odd and very interesting places. Rather than seeing the upper strata of European life, which is impressive, its also handy to see the genuine, slightly grimy Europe. You should try to see the Basque country, The Occitan region, Apullia and Calabria, and perhaps a trip around the former yugoslavia. You should'nt limit yourself to Western Europe, St Petersburg, Kiev, Riga, Vilna and Warsaw are all great cities and Eastern Europe is not only now safe but really good fun.

Great answer above by Elle Elise. I would like to add a few more places. VENICE - ITALY is unique in the world. Take a water bus from the airport to a stop nearest your hotel and off you go. Walking and water buses are the only transport and all you need. Take shoes for walking all day and money; Venice is expensive. There is far too much to see and do than I can list here. It is number one city in the world. You must go there sometime in your life and the sooner the better! St PETERSBURG - RUSSIA. I was only there for thirty-six hours but fell in love with the place. We visited the Hermitage, Peterhof, Catherine Palace, the Fort, and the ballet; which is not expensive and, judging by the mix of the audience, it seems everybody in the city loves ballet and can afford to go to it. You will be best to take tours, all of which come with English speaking guides. We did meet Russians who spoke English, mainly young people who were keen to try out their English on visitors. It would be nice to bone up on a few words of Russian before you go; Hello (two forms, formal and informal, I found neither easy to remember but eventually they suddenly stick), Good Day, Good Evening, Goodbye, Please, Thank You, Yes, No, Excuse me, (for me were easier to remember). It is some years ago that I went there and at that time I did need a Russian Visa which was not cheap, about £20 I think. ISTANBUL - TURKEY. They say that Istanbul is like Marmite, you love it or hate it. If you like browsing through markets and have a sense of humour, you will love it; beware Turkish traders are very good at selling and temptation runs amok. English is widely spoken as is German and Russian. It is a very cosmopolitan city. Transport is easy and there is plenty to see and do. The Haggia Sophia must be one of the worlds most remarkable buildings. PRAGUE - CZECH. It is ages since I went to Prague but I remember it for music, glass, history, inexpensive. The latter may have changed now that capitalism has arrived. BERLIN - GERMANY. Plenty to see and do here. The wall was still there when I went, I expect they will have preserved some of it; also the bust of Nefertiti is in a museum in Charlottenburg (?spelling). Stuff yourself with cream cakes and dance the fat off at nightclubs. That is just a few more cities; get out into towns and villages wherever you go. Reading this back it occurred to me that you may not know what Marmite is. If you come to the UK you must try it; be sure to spread it thinly.

Last summer I went to Tuebingen, Germany, which is southwest in the country. I stayed with a former foreign exchange student my family hosted and I had the best time of my life while I was there. That region is gorgeous too. I suggest if you know somebody you could stay with around your age you should stay with them and do what they do. I can't imagine having to stay in a hotel somewhere and just go see sites.
